EVENT ★ ZETA-12 WEEK 5
ZETA-12: WEEK 5 As the journey wears on, the land underfoot dries out. Team Audiences has reached the highland desert… and of course, once again the squidges begin to transform. For those who encountered the swamp creature: If they stood and fought, their squidge has taken on one of the following features: hardened pangolin-like plates of armor, higher tolerance of loud noises, sharp(er) teeth. If they outsmarted it, their squidge has one of these: slow color-changing to match the environment, catlike eyes with enhanced vision, long ears. Those who made someone else do the work, will have squidges with one of these attributes: small horns, spines along the back, mildly toxic skin. As for dealing with the tornado: Everyone who found shelter will find them with a greater tolerance for enclosed spaces as well as giving off their own very slight heat. For those who powered through, their squidges will no longer be afraid of heights and be able to float several feet off the ground, regardless of whether or not they previously received wings. THE DESERT (WEEK 5) ![]() The desert has a little more to look at than the grasslands offered, as the grass begins to yellow and thin. Some stretches are just wide, empty swaths of dust and dirt, with not much more than the occasional rock or low, desperate scrub brush to color the horizon. Here and there are impressive outcroppings of rock, thrust up from the parched ground. Plateaus and mesas make the scenery, and overhead the sky is a wide, clear blue. The sun is merciless. Hopefully you filled your canteens in the swamp and the grassland, because water is going to become a pretty valuable resource out here. There are a few helpful flora to be found, though. Those Beachwoods will be pretty handy if you run out of water, just so long as you keep an eye out for the Red Stellas that tend to grow nearby. The Scarlet Oasis can even send you on your way with a meal, if you play your cards right. Have a care if you’re gathering any bristlegrass, though. While scenic in its way, the view doesn’t offer much clue as to what progress has been made so far. Three days pass in this way. On the fourth day, however, the recruits encounter their first choice. ![]() The going goes well for those who chose the caves. The cave system is apparently pretty extensive, because they manage to walk along in generally the right direction for a good half a day. Around dusk, though, this little dwarf planet hits a run of bad luck. Meteoroids. Those who chose to walk above ground will find the darkening sky suddenly growing brighter again as a meteor shower begins to burn in the atmosphere. Some of them don’t burn up entirely, though — meteorites begin to pelt the desert not far from the procession. Some of them might even be scattering into the procession. Heads up! But while those above ground only have to worry about dodging, those below ground will have much more serious concerns. This planet isn’t quite as sturdy as recruits may be used to, and the impact of the meteorites is enough to trigger a small earthquake. An underground cave is really not where you want to be during an earthquake, because even this small one is enough to cause a cave-in. Players of recruits who choose to take the cave route can opt to be trapped by this cave in, or can have their characters in the right place at the right time, to have their way to the exit unimpeded. Characters trapped may be freed at whatever speed players find realistic, but to find and free everyone will take no less than three days. Hopefully you brought a flashlight. Communication between those trapped and those above may be difficult, as the meteorites will cause interference and make the jewelry flicker in and out. We ask that you indicate the length of time your character is trapped along with your sign up. After the cave in ordeal is passed, though, the recruits aren’t quite in the clear as they finally reach the end of the desert. It seems the impact of the meteorites and the resulting earthquake released a few gases that had been held under the surface of Zeta-12. They’re invisible and odorless, and harmless to the squidge’s caretakers. The squidges, however, may begin to react to them. Squidges exposed to the post cave-in gasses will begin to get aggressive toward their caretakers and other squidges alike. The level of aggression can range from grumpy to murderous and last from 10 minutes to a few hours, depending on the size of the dose. If anyone has been training their squidges to fight, they may regret it. ![]() OOC NOTES We decided to split things up a little! This log lasts ICly for one week, and OOCly for 1.5 weeks. Our next log will encompass the last biome and the final event, and will go up on August 11th. Characters may proceed at whatever pace they'd like, but going too quickly or too slowly will mean they travel alone. (And those going too quickly will probably have to contend with screaming squidges, who prefer to travel at the speed of an easy plod.) New characters will find one of the unbonded squidges toddling after the group takes a shine to them. A squidge will imprint on them very quickly, then refuse to leave their side or rejoin their unbonded friends. Direct questions about the Zeta-12 mission here. And don't forget about the bounty board! Please remember to select your choice in the thread below! Late choices will not be accepted. How you choose will determine how your squidge grows. Please choose before August 8th, 11:59 PM GMT! |

By the time he arrives though, the meteor's already made impact against- well, actually, he doesn't know just what it hit just now. His eyebrows furrow at the sight, briefly debating, but his thoughts are interrupted by another meteor coming sailing in his direction.
For his part, he scarcely has to look, quickly stepping aside before it impacts the patch of sand he'd once occupied. Sand sprays everywhere, adorning both him and his squidge, and he sputters, first aiming to dust his squidge off.
Although it seems she was protected, he nevertheless thinks it best to verify]
Are you alright, Sieglinde?
no subject
But a voice registers, one she knows.]
- Haise?
[She turns just in time to see him dodge the incoming meteorite... before another chunk slams into her shield and she half-screams in surprise, her squidge beginning to wail in upset as she squeezes it too tightly.]
What is happening?
[Well, she knew... what it was, but. Why? How?]
no subject
If it comes right down to it...there's something he can do]
It looks like- [A pause. His eyes widen slightly and he hops aside again, a smaller meteorite thumping into the sand beside him. Why are there so many?] Maybe there was an impact, up there...and this is debris.
[Incredibly dangerous debris, at that. He closes the distance between them, though he makes no attempt to actually touch the barrier around her]
How long does this last for?
[He points at the shield to indicate his meaning as he listens for anything else that might come their way]
no subject
[It was a concept she was entirely as well versed in compared to the other sciences. Stars she could chart, and constellations, and she could find her location and judge weather by the skies, but space...
She'd only just begun to read about it.
As for the more pressing matter... her gaze darted up towards the cracks in her shield, brow furrowing.]
As long as I've magic to sustain it, but- that gets harder with the more damage it takes...
[And meteorites caused a lot. Another... two impacts, perhaps? One?]
We should seek shelter-
[But even as she said it, she was unsure. There was nothing, nothing but the caves they'd previously elected not to enter, and even then...
The caves...]
no subject
[He spared only a brief glance toward the sky, between speculation and checking for any other meteorites that might come their way. Shelter would be ideal, he knew, but there was getting to that shelter. Staying in one place might run less risk than trying to cover the distance to the caves.
Turning his attention from the sky, he took in Sieglinde's expression]
The caves might be dangerous too — those tremors.
[The way the desert shook beneath them with each impact was quite telling. Depending on what sort of stone those caves were hewn from, entering them could also be a dangerous proposition.
It was a difficult situation. He bit his lip, debating a moment longer before he set Haku down directly beside him and shrugged out of his uniform coat and started to untuck the bottom of his shirt. The reasons would be apparent enough soon]
Between our abilities- [Reluctant as he was, aware how a normal human would react, he knew there was only one way he could assure her safety] ...between us, we can weather this. I'll consider your shield a point of last defense.
no subject
Staying here, though... it was between a rock and a hard place. Still-
Sieglinde glanced around, gritting her jaw as she looked up, waiting, calculating, wincing as a chunk of meteorite hit the sand behind them and only then letting the shield drop for an instant, transferring the wailing squidge to under her left arm and awkwardly holding out her right.]
At least give me your squidge-
no subject
He was relieved that Seiglinde offered to take Haku, smile tight with nerves but grateful nonetheless as he bent to scoop his squidge up, handing his little charge over to her]
Be good for her, Haku.
[As soon as his squidge had safely passed hands he moved away, allowing space for her shield to (hopefully) go right back up. He puffed out a tense breath he didn't know he was holding, though his shoulders remained rigid as he turned his attention back to their surroundings]
Sorry about this...
[That she had to see it. He could tell her to close her eyes or look away before he let his kagune out, but in a situation like this, he couldn't ask it of her. Instead he braced himself for whatever might come their way, his kagune flaring into being behind him, a large crimson limb terminating in a claw.
Despite everything, there was a relief in letting it out, after weeks of refraining in case anyone should happen by at just the wrong moment. As though pressure built up over that time had dissipated, though he could imagine it wasn't a pleasant sight, some serpentine extra limb emerging from his back like some poorly aligned tail.
He set his stance wide when another meteorite came hurtling down in their direction, kagune snapping up to swat it aside. At least this could work...]
no subject
Sorry about what- ?
[Her shield winked back into existence once she could twist her fingers into the casting mechanism she'd created for this spell, one of ALASTAIR's that technically required only mental thought... but she had been raised on more formulative spell-casting, and it was easier to breathe life into them with words and pulls of a gesture trigger.
She understands "what" soon enough, as the kaguna clawed itself into her vision, out of his back. Her head cocked to the side, brow furrowed, expression analytic despite their circumstances, tempted to cast a spell to determine what it was made of until it moved and snapped at an incoming meteorite.
That was reminder enough of where they were.
- Was this a "ghoul", then?]
no subject
I didn't want to burden anyone with the knowledge.
[His voice is soft, kagune flicking behind him with an anxious energy. Whether it's because of his words or because he's at the ready for more incoming matter is anyone's guess, but he keeps his eyes trained on the skies above them. The number of meteorites falling is more than he'd have thought likely in any place, but then, worlds are diverse...
The next time a meteorite hurtles their way, he swats it aside with more difficulty. It lands with a heavy thud against the sand and he grits out a sound of discomfort, kagune twitching as though he can shake off the pain.
Rinkaku have good striking power, but weaker cellular binding. He needs to work on his timing]
no subject
It was not "natural" perhaps... but this was the Green Witch he was working with here. What burden could knowledge be? The only burden in her mind was ignorance.
It leaves her in a weird place, humming with the adrenaline of the situation but strangely made still by the impression that perhaps she was supposed to be afraid. That maybe he wanted her to be afraid.
Well, she was- of being hit by meteorites, at least.
But it left her without anything to say, instead just watching the movement of the kagune, a bead of sweat beginning to drip down her temple from the strain of maintaining her shield and preventing the crack in it from spreading.]
no subject
The distant thumps and thuds of meteorites striking the sand are loud in his ears, scattered and ranging in distance. There aren't as many as before, he thinks, though he was distracted with his concern over what seeing his kagune might cause for Sieglinde. His focus is trained on this task now, watching as more meteorites streak across the sky, waiting for another to stray toward them.
And one does. As does another.
He grits his teeth, quickly debating how to handle this development. There isn't truly time to plan, and his kagune flicks up to catch one meteorite, dragging a hiss from him even as he uses it to clout another away. The first meteorite drops heavily beside him and the second a distance away, and he puffs out an unsteady breath.
While he's far more capable with his kagune than he was, a heavy impact at that kind of speed naturally hurts. But he thinks the numbers are lesser now...it's just a matter of holding out]
no subject
Maybe silence is better for that, in the end, because that sort of thing did look as if it required a lot of concentration.
She concentrated herself- the shield was easy enough to call into existence, but maintaining it was harder work, and even though she trusted Haise... she didn't know about kagune and how much damage they could take, so letting it lapse wasn't an option, even as more sweat beaded on her skin. Her squidge was howling and wriggling in her arms but she held it tight, skin to skin contact beginning to grow red where they touched, but-
Finally. Eventually.
The last meteorite hit the ground, and once a long moment had stretched by with no more impacts, Sieglinde's shield shattered, falling to the ground in sparkles of refractive light.]
no subject
Rather than turn around, Haise busies himself with tucking his shirt in, finding himself reluctant to see how Sieglinde might respond to him now. It was a necessary thing, he knows — and given endless opportunities to revisit the decision it would remain the same. Running for it presented too many risks.
Still, he's explained more about ghouls to her than he has others. If one were to guess at what he is...well. Haise thinks her the most likely to do so.
He should just face whatever follows, he knows. But for a time, it was nice getting to feel normal, as though he were like all of his associates, rather than the way things are back in the CCG. Everyone so aware of what he is, and most of them seeing him as that before anything else]
no subject
But it meant she had to gather herself a moment, panting softly, before she could begin to speak. First, she remembered herself, (rather, remembered her squidge's toxicity), and released Haise's squidge before it could touch hers. Next, she set hers down as distant from it as she could, tried to readjust her gloves.]
- are you alright?
[That seemed the safest place to start.]
no subject
He bent to pick up his coat and Haku toddled over to him, pausing at his side to coo softly and pat a stubby arm against his leg. It was enough to prompt a small, tired smile from him, and he patted his squidge's head in return. This was the first time that the little creature had seen his kagune too, so he felt a wash of relief that at least he didn't frighten the being he was supposed to protect.
As he straightend, he took pause at the question, as though surprised to hear her voice — or perhaps the words themselves]
Yes, I'm quite alright... [His kagune might've suffered heavy damage if that had continued for longer, but fortunately the storm of stone had passed] Thank you, for keeping Haku safe. Were you hurt at all?
no subject
[She was going to say "nauseous", after the skin-to-skin contact with her squidge, but instead she just... turned her head to throw up in her mouth a little.
That likely filled in the blank for everyone involved.
But Sieglinde was nothing if not stubborn, and she choked it down, swallowing with a shuddering gulp before she shot a withering glance at her squidge, thoughts momentarily derailed.
She could skip that sentence, now.]
I am uninjured.
no subject
Does using that magic make you ill...?
[She looked physically unwell, and while he might attribute that to what she'd seen of him...it didn't seem quite right. Sieglinde looked more sick than alarmed, and he had to wonder if it was a matter of ALASTAIR's spells or not. In the past, he had never asked if there were any adverse affects on the caster.
Rather than wait for an answer, he knelt to procure a bottle of water from his pack and offered one to her]
Here.
no subject
[She knows it likely didn't "decide" anything, really, but she couldn't help the resentment in her tone, nor the revelation in her phrasing that she still hadn't actually named her squidge like... almost every other recruit had.
There was no way to hide the fact that she was still jittery from the meteors, a bit jumpy, and her magic did take a lot out of her- energy wise. In particular, holding that shield for a prolonged time was draining, and she certainly would need to sleep deeply later, but.
For now, she takes the water, the inside of her arm reddened and swollen from where she'd been touching her squidge. There's a moment of hesitation, unsure if it was her place to ask or if it was a subject that shouldn't be broached... but she wouldn't be able to tell unless she tried to ask. This wasn't a matter of her world that she knew how to tiptoe around.]
- was that a "quinque"?
[She knew it wasn't, but. The reaction would tell her if she should ask any further or not.]
no subject
It wasn't something he managed to formulate a question for, by the time Sieglinde voiced her own inquiry. For a long moment, he remained silent, simultaneously aware that the suggestion was an easy out of sorts but well aware that it would be an easily discovered lie.
He didn't take more than that pause, short and long as it was, to shake his head]
No, my quinque is more recognizable as a weapon... But it's crafted from the same sort of thing.
[A rather dark reality that he hadn't yet voiced, not to anyone, for all its implications]
no subject
But she's less concerned now with the lingering nausea and irritation on her skin and more curious about Haise's expression, trying to discern the emotions behind them, and find the answer to the question of whether she ought to ask further.
Made of the same materials. Which meant ghoul. Which meant Haise... was somehow related to the beings he had explained were a danger in their world, something people in a group he belonged to hunted.
He never shared food with her.]
- I see.
[But he'd never told her.
So she didn't say it.]
no subject
For the moment, he shifted Haku to one arm so he could sift through his pack. While Haise understood it wasn't quite right to leave the matter at that, and didn't intend to, Sieglinde's health had to take priority]
You should rinse your affected skin...here.
[Finally finding what he was looking for, he offered her a water bottle. Doubtless he didn't have to tell her something she already knew, but it was far easier to focus on her well-being than what he was supposed to say to her. She knew now, where no one else did. It was something he'd never intended to make anyone else aware of, certain that it would only ever end poorly.
But if she was repulsed or horrified by the reality of what he was, it wasn't apparent. His associates had never masked their distaste for the fact, back home, though a scant few had been surprisingly accepting]
no subject
But thankfully, she at least had a semblance of propriety, even if that semblance only reared its head under entirely specific circumstances. Thankfully, perhaps, for Haise... hiding what one was... that was one of those circumstances.
After all, she came from a group that she'd been raised thinking would be tortured and killed if they were discovered. She knew the stories, what it was like to be afraid for people to know a truth.]
Thank you.
[But she would accept the water, since it was the correct way to go about things, better to save her magic for more dire situations than mild poisoning. There wasn't a trace of fear on her face when she took the bottle, flushing the rash that had sprung up on the insides of her arms with a clinical precision.]
no subject
His lips pressed into a pensive line, he considered why Sieglinde might remain calm, but ultimately it could only be speculation. Unless he spoke up, he wouldn't know the reason, and could only guess as the reasons why.
Unlike Juuzou, she hadn't been raised by a ghoul. Unlike his squad, she didn't have powers that tread a fine line between human and ghoul. And unlike some of his superiors, Sieglinde wasn't liable to have the power to destroy him, and was too smart to presume him harmless.
Puffing out a soft, tense breath, he looked down at his squidge]
I'm half.
[Just two simple words. They felt heavy, even though he realized they might be meaningless on their own]
Although I don't remember...the result of experimentation. [His voice was stiff, despite his efforts] Being born this way would've been...rare.
no subject
Half a "ghoul", and made so artificially, not through the more rare natural means.
It's still information disconnected, not being from his world, but it answered more of her questions than he might think. It offered a theory as to why, though he had explained to her ghouls' diets, that he seemed to be getting by in that department somehow without people showing up dead. It explained the stigma, because in her experience humans often despised a half more than the whole, because half... it served as a reminder than things were not so far removed as one might wish to think.]
I see.
[There were still things she couldn't guess yet, or put into words, finishing with his water and handing back the bottle. She'd been raised with werewolves lurking in the woods and in the windows, she'd gone before them unarmed since she was but a girl, and a ghoul... it seemed only slightly worse. But this wasn't "a ghoul".
It was Haise.]
That must be difficult for you.
[All of it. And her expressions, open and innocent as a child who had never needed in her whole life to lie, betrayed her sympathy for sincere, if not somewhat ignorant of his circumstances by nature.
But it was to say, more accurately, her appreciation to be confided in.]
no subject
And the awareness that the day he failed to be so would be his last looms heavily over him. More than the despairing limitations of his own diet, his inability to simply enjoy meals with his squad, he's haunted by the reality that he may only live so long as he proves it worthwhile to the CCG.
It's nothing that he's ever complained of, because there was no one to talk to. Certainly, none of his associates back home would understand. Most of them naturally hated ghouls (most orphaned by them), and he doubted any of them could imagine an existence dominated only by their perceived utility. In ALASTAIR... Haise knows better than to expect the exact same treatment, but he also knows the image the word "ghoul" conjures for fellow recruits, and doesn't expect them to be any more accepting of it.
He'd been taught that he should hate what he was, and to expect that it would be hated.
So Sieglinde's simple acceptance of it, her lack of revulsion, is more than he would've hoped to expect. His shoulders shake for a brief instant as he thinks on that, but it passes quickly]
It- [He pauses, finding his voice lacking, and tries again] It comes with its own challenges.
[At least in ALASTAIR, the constant fear that he'll be disposed of for not performing to expectations has been lifted. That too is better than he could've expected. And he knows the organization is well aware of what he is, since they supply him with the means to sustain himself]
I've not told anyone.
[Not before her, just now, though it may have been clear enough already]
