EVENT ★ THE USUAL SUSPECTS
THE BARRIER As promised, Arthur has the means to unlock that first, crucial step to saving the ALASTAIR recruits: unveiling the runes maintaining the barrier. He has sequestered himself in a rented room in the inn down the road from the prison; he’s at a good enough distance to keep his concentration unbroken, but near enough that he can reach the runes in question. The recruits are told to be ready, to wait for his signal before they take action. By the time those in the cells are finally brought out, it’s pandemonium. The guards, jailers and city guards alike, might not have been able to stop ALASTAIR’s recruits from destroying the runes and bringing down the barrier, but they’re determined at least to stop dangerous criminals from escaping into the city. And these criminals were due to be hung, so they’re not looking to take anyone down peacefully. They’ll be going for the killing blows. Those that helped free their friends probably won’t run into too many problems in the following days, unless you run into a guard with a few injuries and a long memory. The ex-prisoners, though, are another story. They were in there long enough that the men and women who guarded them know most of their faces quite well, and since they’re out of prisoners to guard, what else do they have to do but take to the streets and search? Ex-prisoners should play it carefully, then, if they don’t want to end up right back where they started. Guards are more than happy to cause an immediate fracas should they spot anyone that belongs in jail. |
melan / open!
[ despite what one may expect, he's not bothered at all by the prospect of busting criminals out of jail - the fact that his understanding of law as a whole is extremely minor doesn't hurt. To him, the issue is black and white. His allies are being held captive. The ones holding them are the opponent. Defeating them and rescuing his newfound comrades is just a necessary step to get back to Brigadoon - to Marin, adds his heart. Love is a strong enough motivation to make him do nearly anything.
He's unfamiliar with magic, but the level of technology where he's from is so high that it's not dissimilar to magic. The runes are just another type of barrier to him. And when you have an energy rifle grafted to your left arm, destroying the outside of a stone building is hardly an issue. Guards and jailers are more of a problem, so he decides to leave them to the others for now; Melan stays in his element, wings spread, darting through the air like an enormous insect as he travels around the perimeter of the building in search of runes. Arrows sail towards him, and a few even protrude from his body, but he remains undeterred. Watch out for falling rubble from his blasts.
If he spots someone who appears to have a moment of calm - fleeting as it may be - he may land nearby, signalled by the sound of rushing air, and address them: ]
What is the current status of the mission?
2 / escapin some escapees
[ once the jailbreak has been jailbroken, so to speak, Melan is one of those highly-destructive types who stays around the longest, fending off guards, jailers, and anyone else looking mildly aggressive to buy time for others to escape. After all, he's a living weapon. Despite the fact that he's heavily armed with weapons with clear killing potential, other combatants may notice a pointed effort from this murderbot not to kill anyone, although he is not always successful.
As the endless night winds on, the aggression increases, and the number of stragglers dwindles, though, he knows it's high time that he gets out of here. No promise ties him to this fight; there is meaning in his survival, not victory. Melan is obviously wounded (a viscous purple substance that has to be his blood is oozing out of several of his fleshier parts), but, nonetheless, he's the one who offers to help, not be helped. Any other fighters nearby will hear the click of his wings unfolding; he shoves off the man crossing swords with him before turning his head to speak. ]
There's no need to continue fighting. We should leave now.
2!
Up until this point he has been surreptitious and sparing with the use of his kagune, but he finds he doesn't have much of a choice now. Two of the claws trail behind him like sanguine ribbons, twisting and turning with each movement he made to attack or defend against assailants—like Melan, he almost unilaterally avoids lethal attacks, instead opting to break swords and spears whenever possible (sending soldiers flying with a brunt of his kagune when that failed).
He has focused intently on fighting, having just looped one of his kagune around a man's leg to yank him off of his feet, using the other to knock his weapon away. It's then that he hears Melan's voice, turning his attention to the robotic creature at his imperatives.
Kaneki's mismatched eyes instinctually lock onto the wound, the strange blood leaking from it. He has to resist the urge to wrinkle his nose—the air is choked enough with the scent of human blood and flesh, but he gets the feeling that of this person wouldn't be nearly as... preferable.
The half-ghoul withdraws his kagune from the guard, leaving him to scramble away. He doesn't go for his blade. It's for the best.]
Are you sure we have all of them? [Not one to leave anyone behind.]
no subject
No. The number of hostages wasn't known to me. [ his voice is as flat and mechanically-toneless as ever. ] However, remaining here for much longer makes sustaining serious injuries likely. The majority of our comrades are gone.
[ both combatants and non-combatants. They're outnumbered by the guards and townsfolk, as well, and even a living weapon will get tired out and overwhelmed eventually... escape will become difficult. ]
no subject
Like, Kaneki would have little issue accepting a fellow ghoul, but this person...
He remains unfazed by Melan's tone of voice; what he said was of more interest. Kaneki casts a wary glance into the gloom, senses of hearing and smell sharp for pursuers. It wouldn't be long before they were beset once more.
Matter-of-fact:] ...You're right. We should fall back.
[He turns, though something seems to occur to him. He looks back to Melan.] Was it ever established where we were supposed to return to?
[They most likely won't be welcome guests in the town after this...]
no subject
The agreement is faintly reassuring. ]
No, [ he repeats. ] But leaving the battlefield will still be safer. Afterwards, we can find places to hide.
[ maybe. He has no idea how he's going to hide anywhere in this place, but he'll figure that out later. ]
... The goblins may shelter us. [ whatever a goblin is. ] I can fly. Do you require transportation?
no subject
He wonders, then, about the missing pieces he had in understanding this. What were they fighting so hard to do? Why did they want these people to remain imprisoned so badly?
Maybe asking around after they escaped would offer answers, but for now, Melan is right. There was no use in standing around talking about it.] Getting outside of town might be a good idea, then. Until things calm down.
[Kaneki thinks he'll have issues hiding as well. The white hair tended to be distinctive—thought definitely not as much so as Melan.
He casts a surprised look at him at the offer.] I - [am not really sure how to respond to that. Was it polite to say yes? Would it trouble him? Kaneki knew he could get away if needed, no issue, but... it would mean more people getting a good look at him as he withdrew.] As - long as it wouldn't inconvenience you.
[And he'd be lying if he said he wasn't interested to see how the robot was going to do just that...]

Perhaps because of that, Melan is met with a slightly more amused reception than he might have been otherwise. Sebastian has just finished dispatching some of those guards, though his appearance is still elegant and composed. It's easy for him, after all. This part of their odd little mission was almost similar enough to what Sebastian was used to working for Ciel. ]
Going well, I would say. There are quite a lot of those runes to take care of, but, well. We seem to be making quick work of them.
[ He pauses, then inclines his head towards one of those arrows. ]
I take it those do not bother you?
no subject
[ he's neither reassuring nor bragging; it's merely a statement of his thoughts. The mission doesn't seem like it will be a difficult one. Humans don't pose much of a threat to a Monomakia, either. Compared to protecting Marin and the Creis, this is almost too easy.
Of course, he lacks the sort of questioning doubt necessary to really think something like that.
At the mention of his wounds, he looks down, lifting his rifle arm slightly. ]
They are painful, but minor. Functionality has not dropped below 80%.
no subject
[ Sebastian responds cheerily, but really, he could probably do so rather easily if he were willing to unmask himself a bit. But he's absolutely not. He'll pretend to be human as long as he can, especially so long as Sieglinde remains ignorant of what he is. ]
80%, though? My, you really are specific about it... Though personally, that is still quite a large percentage. [ In the perfectionist's opinion. ] Would removing them help you at all?
no subject
My combat performance isn't affected, [ Melan replies again, evidently clarifying why it's not a large percentage... he doesn't seem to care very much about his injuries. ] But...
[... this human in black has a point. Two of the round nodules on his abdomen pop out, connected by wiring, and begin to remove the two or three arrows poking out of him, pinching them between those "paws." Evidently, they do actually hurt, given the small noise of pain he makes. ]
no subject
He'd like to know more, he thinks, though that's just an idle fancy.
He motions towards Melan, specifically at an arrow that's closer to his back and therefore a bit more difficult to reach. ]
Would you like for me to assist, sir?

[ Moment of calm is...
Relative. Is Papyrus ever really "calm"? Also he was never corrected on that just being a username and not whole name. ]
I know you are a "combat specialist" but right now you are a HUGE MESS SPECIALIST. Look at all this rubble!! How are we supposed to get back out of the castle when there's all these rocks in the way??
no subject
but not now. Part of the reason Melan approached Papyrus was because he recognized him, obviously; that said, when he's immediately scolded upon landing, he seems relatively surprised, flinching back just a little. ]
Papyrus. [ that's a 'hello.' ] ... Sorry. Should I clear the rubble?

[ and he's been successful! Mostly. Spending time on Earth has taught him a little bit about the value of life.
Having said that, he stops and stares around for a second, looking for... looking for a fire, i'm sorry. ]
"Fire exit?"
no subject
[ MELAN PLEASE DO NOT RELY ON PAPYRUS FOR ANY KIND OF EXPLANATION. ]
There isn't one now, but I'm sure one will show up sooner or later with all this going on. Anyway! I'm going inside now! You should stay out here to escort people out if they need it. Remember not to kill anyone! Ever! Rendering unconscious is okay though!!

But this... person... had arrows sticking out of him. And wings. And... weapons on his arm.
But that's not what Sieglinde comments on- he asked a question, it was relevant to a rather important mission, and she had an answer. Even though it wasn't a particularly good one.]
There are still runes remaining-
[The one near the ground she's just taken care of, a glass vial of liquid in her hand and the wall smoking and pitted, but there's one on the underside of a roof that she points at.]
There!
[Just one, but she couldn't exactly reach it.]
no subject
He turns on a dime almost as soon as she points, rifle aiming and firing near-simultaneously. His accuracy and swiftness is pretty damn impressive. The rune is destroyed - as is a small portion of the roof it was connected to, clay shingles and stones flying off and plummeting to the ground nearby. Some of them might have threatened to land on the two of them, but he's quick to bat away any offending debris with his sword.
It all only takes a few seconds. Then, he turns to Sieglinde again, lowering his weapons. ]
You're a soldier? [ there is a mild tone of disbelief in his voice. ]
no subject
The question registered a beat later.]
Of course not-
no subject
[ it's not scolding or concerned or dismissive or anything of the smart - merely matter-of-fact, as if he's reading an entry from the dictionary. Melan doesn't really understand why there are so many non-combatants around when they're clearly in a battle zone, even if he himself isn't partaking in the actual combat very much. ]
no subject
I know that!
[She knew she was small, that it was dangerous, that she wasn't a soldier- but at least some of the runes she could destroy... She struggled back up to her feet using the wall to support herself, ascertaining the positions of those she'd come with to do this- Rin and her Archer, Sebastian... But before she got back to them...]
- you be careful as well!
[She didn't know... Him? But he was ALASTAIR, there was no doubt about that. A comrade.]

2. i want a cute robot in my life
There's a medical base set up not too far from here. We should stop there first
[He is wounded and she less so, though blood still seeps from a shallow cut on her left arm and there's a bruise darkening on her cheek, difficult to see in the nearly black street. They'll both need medical attention first before they head anywhere else.]
then you've come to the right place
Are you in need of attention immediately? I'll carry you.
[ two of the round compartments on his abdomen unfurl just slightly, extending forward on thin tendrils. ]
bless
Ah, is this going to escalate into tentacle porn of some kindShe'd assumed he'd be cognizant of his own injuries and willing to put a pause to his fighting; it takes a moment for her to react when the attention's deflected back to her. (Mostly because the unfurling components to his armor (??) throw her off quite a bit.]
Me? My injuries can wait. [They'll benefit from a good period of rest than anything else.] I was more concerned about you.
no subject
You were concerned about me? [ what a concept. Melan sounds legitimately surprised, but he only pauses for a moment, "paws" retracting back into his external armor. So even people outside of Marin and her makeshift family had the capacity to worry about him. Remarkable. ]
There's no need. My body regenerates automatically. I'm only a little tired.
