He manipulates spirit particles and remakes them in his own image, however temporary (but still destructive) the effect may be.

He uses particle physics to control his own Shikai, rather than simply force of will like most Shinigami- it's his niche. "I believe I caught the implication that you could do that to anything. Is that true?"
