[ After fashioning themselves up in more... appropriate clothing, Jesper and Kaz get to doing what they do best. Working. Or well, in Jesper's case, it's doing whatever his boss tells him because Kaz usually knows what to do. He's the schemer, even if Jesper's the one who knows a little more about the sweet clothing styles of Perdition's Rest.
It doesn't take long to get intel on where the bandits are hiding out. The snow on the ground doesn't give 'em many options when it comes to places to hole up. ]
I'm guessing it won't be much different from a real horse, once we find one.
[ Jesper checks his pistols, loading them up with the few bullets he has and some he's had to buy. Maybe he'd have more if he hadn't spent a whole cartridge trying to impress Giorno, who knows. ]
You can leave that to me, Kaz, I'm good with horses.
[Honestly, Kaz feels a little ridiculous. Jesper picked them out clothing, although Kaz was not about to let Jesper put him in some ostentatious color, opting for blacks and whites, still wearing black gloves. At least they look the part. It helps that the two of them actually are killers and thieves so the whole "yes hello I am a hardened bandit" actually...plays out pretty well on both of them.]
You're also good with metal. I don't see how you could mess this up.
[ Yeah, uh. Wow. Jesper grits his teeth through the reminder. He's opted to a dark green overcoat over his bright purple jacket but even with the addition of a cowboy hat, Kaz still sees fit to bring up the Grisha thing. It makes Jesper's teeth itch just thinking about it, but he sucks it up. He did fuck up the Ice Court job and even if it's not directly his fault Inej was taken, he can see why Kaz would need someone to vent. ]
Thanks.
[ Truly though, it doesn't take much to fake looking dangerous. They may not look like the Qorral, but they could just as well be unsavory types taking a break from "fixing" worlds to steal some poor bandit's coin. Not that the possibility is entirely off the table. ]
We'll head out to the desert to find one of the bandit camps. Set a distraction to spit up the bandits, corner the smallest party and take the horse.
[simple. but i mean hes got back up plans for his back up plans lets be real]
It would be easier if Peter just handed us the tracker to start with, but I suppose the horse will just figure out how to get back to camp once he's put the tracker on it.
[he shrugs. sometimes people were dumb. what happens to the horse after peter has it is quite honestly not kaz's problem]
[ Jesper already knows he's the distraction, he doesn't have to ask. He's got his guns and his wits and his powers, for all that they might not do him much good. He's set. ]
I mean, they're mechanical right? Maybe they were made to come back to their owners.
[ Not that Jesper has a clue about how mechanical horses work, but horses sometimes know how to come home, you know? ]
[ He's got a nice pouch and everything. I mean it's not nice but it's enough to hold a blanket and a tent in, so it's more like a sack than anything else. ]
Believe it or not, I did survive a whole week here on my own, Kaz.
[i mean he knows jesper's been okay. jesper even managed to get good information. but he already gave him a compliment.]
No mourners.
[he picks up his stuff (he gathered supplies after picking out clothes, has managed to do pretty well with his money but then again when hasn't he?), and his cane. he wishes he didn't have it, but he doesn't have anywhere to leave it for now so it was what it was. if he was asked he could just say he got shot at some point, whatever. and, without waiting for jesper's reply, heads off in the direction of the desert.]
[ Jesper follows, staying close behind (but not too close, he knows Kaz likes his space.) Wandering through the desert in the winter can't be fun, but at least it should only take them an hour or so of traveling in silence before they find signs of a bandit camp in the distance. And yes, believe it or not, Jesper can keep quiet for that long. It involves a lot of self-control and checking the network. And anticipating violence, that always helps.
(That, and their Magitek has a nice added positioning systems so hey, they'll definitely find their way back.) ]
[wow jesper this was...this was truly a feat. kaz is going to write it down on his calendar. "today is the day jesper didn't talk for a whole hour. but he sees the smoke right before jesper (totally right before) and nods]
Doesn't mean it's bandits, but I can't imagine there are many others out here.
[ Treasure these moments, Kaz. Maybe Jesper is just glad to have you back and spent the better part of the hour admiring your pretty ass in those pants, huh??? What about that??? ]
Either way, looks like we found our mark.
[ Do you really think Peter will notice if the horses don't belong to bandits? Probably not. Jesper grabs his guns and steps in a little closer. ]
[ugh whatever you do you jesper. whatever keeps morale high
anyway he checks out the camp. what do you elf eyes see legolas]
Looks like there's five or six horses, maybe ten men. We'll split up. You stay here, I'll go around to the back of the camp. I'll signal you and then you shoot at them to misdirect them while I grab one of the horses.
If, for some reason, you manage to get shot at "not in the fun way" [completely deadpanned, and thus delivered not in the fun way] yell and I'll spook the horses and get everyone off your back. It'll be harder to get the horses if there's too much panic so try not to do that.
[kaz nods. he leaves their stuff in a safe location not too far off from jesper so they won't be weighed down by it. they shouldn't actually end up with enough company that it'll be an issue.
he leaves his cane too, but still moves eerily fast despite his injury, and definitely silently. when he gets to the place he wanted to be, he gives the signal (an owl's call) to jesper. have fun shooting things, friend.]
Jesper hears the signal and casts a look at the camp. This is the kind of fun he'd been missing. He can see where Kaz is going to approach, so obviously it's time to make some noise. He ducks out from the rock he'd been hiding from, setting off a few choice shots above the bandits' heads. The sound should make it obvious where he's shooting from, but his aim will seem "off" enough that the bandits will definitely want to investigate.
"Who's there?" one of them yells, while the rest quickly go for their guns. Jesper fires off another shot at the first guy's feet, tempting him forward. They quickly begin to move away from their horses, firing off wild shots to where they seem to think this 'ambush' is coming from. "They're by the rocks! Let's show these bastards not to mess with us!"
But don't worry, Jesper's fine. He just needs the guys to be a little further away so Kaz can do his thing. ]
[it's better than grabbing real horses because it's a machine and machines don't cause an alarm when someone they don't belong to starts grabbing them. at least he hopes so. anyway the bandits are all looking around off towards jesper (ish, the aim was intentionally off. good.) so kaz sneaks up to one of the "horses" and grabs the reins, pulling it off towards his hiding spot while the bandits keep yelling to one another.
they're skittish. too skittish for bandits - something definitely happened recently. which is sort of good but also could mean they won't act the way they'd normally expect this to go.
hopefully no one is going to see him taking the stupid metal horse and hiding it behind a well-place hill. i mean, yeah, it's totally nice to have a hill behind you for defense. and totally also great for hiding a horse if someone snuck up to your camp.]
[ Jesper doesn't really have much time to see if Kaz is getting his part of the job done. He's a little busy trying to distract the bandits and also keep them from getting too close. Thankfully, the bandits seem to be more afraid of an impending attack than someone stealing their horses, since their attention seems to fall solely on Jesper and his spot on the other side of camp. Jesper knows how to shoot wild and play the target, but he won't come out of cover just yet.
"How many of them are there?" The bandits seem to not want to go out too far, perhaps figuring it's not worth risking another Dread Knight (or whatever the hell Koltira is) massacre, but even a scout heading Jesper's way is good for their plan. It means they won't be scouting their horses. Especially not when a few more bullets land just inches of said scout's head. Eh, he'll go ahead and graze him, just so they don't think they're outmatched.
Jesper kind of hopes Kaz has a getaway plan here because as much as he could maybe fabrikate some of the guy's guns into misfiring, he'd rather not have a whole trail of bandits on his tail before they make their big escape out of here... ]
[yeah okay here comes the good part are you ready for it. kaz brekker, born in the barrel, resident city boy birthed from the fucking canals comes riding out on their mechanical pony from around the back of said hill, off at a full gallop. he stops past the hiding point of their stuff - manages to lean down and grab it. nimble enough to grab it although he winces and swears under his breath at the strain it puts on his leg.
then it's an open stretch between the hill and where jesper is sort of covered right now from the gun fire. so watch as kaz rides a majestic beautiful metal orange stallion from the hill to jesper and then leans down and in a swooping motion grabs jesper by his collar and hauls him (i really hope jesper helps here because kaz is only so strong he is not mattias) up onto the horse he's just liberated and manages to do all of this at a gallop, as mentioned before, with a perfect seat.
[ What the Actual Fuck, Kaz. You're not supposed to be good at riding, that was supposed to be Jesper's thing! Nonetheless, Jesper sees Kaz pulling all this shit off and he is suitably impressed, almost enough to miss out on his queue for "get the fuck on the horse, Jesper."
Almost.
Jesper holsters his guns and scrambles onto the back of their surreptitiously stolen stallion, holding onto the saddle as best he can since he Knows Kaz Hates Touching. He may not know the full extent but it wouldn't exactly surprise him if the horse's speed was due to, y'know, the fact that Kaz wanted to get this over with ASAP. Sometimes you make sacrifices for the greater good, Kaz. You're a true hero.
Please don't throw up while riding a horse at full gallop, though. ]
[there's definitely something about his tone that suggests he's a hundred percent serious, but maybe that's also just the sound of kaz not wanting to be this close to another human being.]
Hang onto our effects.
[it's sloppily and hastily tied to the saddle so if jesper doesn't hold on they're going to be missing some tents and blankets. his cane was shoved into a really convenient gun holster that happened to be on the saddle. sometimes things work out.]
[ Hey, at least Jesper is 100% alive. And it's a good thing these horses are mechanical or the strength he's using to keep his legs firmly around the horse would likely spook a normal one. He kinda has to, when he's apparently now holding onto their things as well as the saddle.
A better fabrikator could just fabrikate handles onto a horse like this, maybe even extra stirrups out of its sides somehow. Jesper can't help but think of all the ways his powers would be way more useful here if he could actually do anything with them. Now isn't really the time to be thinking like this. He's got better things to distract himself with than his own sense of Grisha-related inadequacy. ]
[it's a rhetorical question. one that pretty much means youre never getting an answer. besides, the strain in his voice hasn't left. at least they're separated with the saddle but this whole experience isn't one he would've picked for himself.]
[ Ah yes, the ol' "You must be THIS level to unlock my Tragic Backstory" line. Although in Kaz's case Jesper really is sure he'll never know. Kaz Brekker is just like that. A mystery wrapped up in an enigma and it'd be annoying on anyone else but Jesper has always found it kind of really cool. Even if it can be kind of annoying at times. ]
You never gonna cease to amaze me, Kaz.
[ Jesper just laughs, knowing that's the best answer he's gonna get. It's going to be a faster ride back to Perdition's Rest, but it's still going to be a while. Maybe Kaz will appreciate the distraction (or maybe he won't.) ]
