He can hardly be surprised that she would so doggedly pursue redemption for her own (perceived, in his opinion) sins even here, but as such, it’s similarly no surprise that the idea of having it undone would be distressing. Though that does put him in a somewhat awkward situation, as comforting her feels a bit beyond him. It would be obviously transparent, wouldn’t it? By her measure he hasn’t seen him for years, and so hs comfort would only come off as platitudes. Which would be quite accurate, but he assumes at this point that she wouldn’t know that.

So there’s another pause, somewhat awkward, but he ends up just adjusting her on his arm as they move. It’s half to carry her more securely, and half as if to physically jolt her out of er despair. ]
