Simon has to switch gears entirely to the interpretation Veronica’s using for this question, which is actually the normal one, and the one he would have started with a few months ago, when he had more confidence in his understanding of what constitutes “people” and “lives”. But they’re using some solid but unspoken definition of “people” here, and honestly, it’s really hard to say serial killers and rapists aren’t just categorically worse than other people. They feel like they are. So that’s the truth. ]


I don’t know what the base value of a person would be, but I can’t pretend some people don’t feel like less of a loss when they die than others, so yeah, I guess... some people are evil enough that their lives are worth less.

[ The orb deems this true; subjectively, he assumes, even though making an authoritative statement like that feels weird and he looks antsy at its affirming glow. If all robots with brain scans are people, does Simon even have room to act as if he and Veronica are on the same page in condemning killers? ]
