PLAYER EVENT ★ HELIOLOGY

INTRODUCTION.

It's difficult to tell time without the presence of a sun or moon. There are no stars. The world is in constant blackness, the heavens barely visible from below and the only light artificial. It's been like this for months.

Suddenly, those who expressed interest in observing the sun (or lack thereof) will all at once receive a text message on their ALASTAIR jewellery from 82736775:

Get your shit and go look at the sky. Now's the time. If you need me, I'm around.
It's time to get to work.

OBSERVATION.

Find the highest point you can and point the telescopes at the sky. Should be easy, right?

Be mindful that there are still guards patrolling the city, looking for escaped prisoners, and some citizens would be very happy to tip them off to your presence. There are still animals in the forests to contend with, and there are still nosey citizens who may ask you too many questions. There are also your fellow ALASTAIR agents, who may not be very willing to share the spot they already staked out before you just showed up.

People and animals aren't all you need to look out for, either. Seven hours after the observation starts, there is a lightning storm. It lasts for 30 minutes, bolts of electricity arcing across the sky. It might be a good idea to scurry down someplace lower when this happens -- you know what they say about lightning and height.

82736775 doesn't contact anyone after the initial text, so observers are free to give up whenever they decide they've been sitting out in the freezing dark for long enough.

[ note: even if you didn't sign up, feel free to tag in! your character won't have a telescope but that doesn't mean they can't mingle. ]

[ Oikawa might have found the roof to himself this time around, but all his traipsing around on the tile isn't exactly a subtle venture, not for the other denizens of the top floor anyway. With the thud and creak of footsteps overhead becoming too suspicious to ignore, Sigma swings out of his own window and eyes up the ascent for himself. He can't see anything from here, but... it doesn't look like too bad of a climb. ]

[ So with one less telescope and significantly more upper body strength than the source of the ruckus, Sigma scuffles his own way up the side of the building, propping his chin over the edge of the tile to peer around and spot... Oikawa... With a telescope? ]

What, your window have a bad view of the nothing out tonight?

[ After not-so-swiftly scaling up the slope, he finally reaches the roof's peak. He's in the middle of finding a comfortable position when a voice from behind him makes him jump in surprise. ] AHHH! [ He lets out an unattractive yelp, and feeling himself lose his balance, he lurches forward, grabbing onto the roof tiles with both hands to keep himself steady. He whips his head around to see... ] Sigma? [ Cue the exasperated sigh. ] Geez, don't sneak up on me like that! You almost made me fall off! [ He wasn't expecting to see him here, of all places. ]

I'm collecting data. You know, for the mission? [ He takes the telescope out from under his arm and sets it down on his lap. ] What are you doing up here?

Shit—!

[ As it turns out, accidental attempted murder is a great pull-up motivator. As Oikawa starts to tip, Sigma hauls himself up over the edge of the roof onto his knees in a hurried singular motion. Granted, the kid's keeling away from him, but A for effort, right? Thankfully he manages to catch himself before he goes rolling off the other side of the roof. ]

Geez yourself! Hate to see you run into any angry bats up here, your heart'd probably stop before you hit the ground!

[ Pot, kettle, Sigma, you're pretty jumpy yourself. Standing up, he makes his way carefully over to Oikawa and sits down beside him. As is the way of bros. ]

Oh right, that. [ That mission he'd been in too much of a weird Toronto-inspired fever dream to sign up for otherwise he totally would have. ] Me? I was just curious. Need any help with that?

[ Read: Want any company? ]

[ Oikawa unfortunately misses Sigma's impressive athletic feat, too preoccupied by the fear of falling to his death, so he briefly wonders how Sigma managed to get up onto the roof without him noticing. But after hearing the taller man's comment, he turns his head away and huffs dramatically in a typical Oikawa fashion. Don't mind him Sigma, he's always like this. He's actually quite pleased to see a familiar face. ]

[ He turns back to see Sigma making his way over and promptly taking a seat next to him. Maybe having an extra pair of eyes around wouldn't be such a bad idea. He doesn't mind having a bit of company either; who knows how long they'll be out here? ]

Yeah, actually... [ Oikawa looks down at the telescope sitting in his lap, twirling it around between his hands and inspecting every inch of it with a careful eye. ] Do you see an "on" switch anywhere on this thing?

[ That's okay... That just means he's mysterious and powerful. Like Batman. The microscopic but lingering possibility that one might be Batman is probably one of the best impressions one could ever make on another person. ]

[ The melodramatic huff earns the shiteating grin of an argument won in return, mostly dissipated by the time the kid turns back to him. After all, he's up here for a reason, and now Sigma is too. He watches Oikawa turn over the... resourceful piece of craftsmanship for a minute. ]

I'm pretty sure telescopes function right on their own, unless it's got some fancy features... And I have my doubts about this thing. [ After Oikawa's thorough once-over, Sigma lifts the device out of his hands and peers experimentally through the eyepiece. His expression is quick to level out into one of stoically abrupt investment. ] Oh yeah, it works just fine.

[ The telescope isn't pointed skyward. ]
