INTRODUCTION. It's difficult to tell time without the presence of a sun or moon. There are no stars. The world is in constant blackness, the heavens barely visible from below and the only light artificial. It's been like this for months. Suddenly, those who expressed interest in observing the sun (or lack thereof) will all at once receive a text message on their ALASTAIR jewellery from 82736775: Get your shit and go look at the sky. Now's the time. If you need me, I'm around. It's time to get to work. OBSERVATION. Find the highest point you can and point the telescopes at the sky. Should be easy, right? Be mindful that there are still guards patrolling the city, looking for escaped prisoners, and some citizens would be very happy to tip them off to your presence. There are still animals in the forests to contend with, and there are still nosey citizens who may ask you too many questions. There are also your fellow ALASTAIR agents, who may not be very willing to share the spot they already staked out before you just showed up. People and animals aren't all you need to look out for, either. Seven hours after the observation starts, there is a lightning storm. It lasts for 30 minutes, bolts of electricity arcing across the sky. It might be a good idea to scurry down someplace lower when this happens -- you know what they say about lightning and height. 82736775 doesn't contact anyone after the initial text, so observers are free to give up whenever they decide they've been sitting out in the freezing dark for long enough. [ note: even if you didn't sign up, feel free to tag in! your character won't have a telescope but that doesn't mean they can't mingle. ]

Did no one tell you how dangerous it is to fall asleep next to open fire?

[Shiki weighed whether or not he should have just rolled over and kept sleeping.

He opted to curl up, turning away from Olivia--doing exactly that.]

You didn't even have the decency to kiss me...

[winces]

[ she puffs up at that, so it's a good thing he can't see and make fun of her for it. ]

Only good, smart boys get kisses!

[ pause. ]

Or a prince!

Hmmm. [Sitting up, Shiki adjusted his glasses. Once he felt a bit more awake--it was easier to brush past being flat out rude.

He recognized Olivia a bit more, which...

Did nothing to dissuade him from teasing.]

'Boys'? You know, you sounded fairly earnest for a bit, but that last part sounded a little shallow. Is that fine by you?

[winces]

[ she reaches over and slaps his glasses off his face gives his cheek a pinch. ]

I'm only saying what hundreds of fairytales have said before!

[ BUT ANYWAY— ]

Stop trying to change the subject! You shouldn't have fallen asleep out here!

[satsujinki]

[Shiki raised his hand nonchalantly, shooing away Olivia's hand.]

Stop acting like a nanny.

[He complained, actively seeming to enjoy being in a bad mood with Olivia--]

You should thank me for getting a chance to lecture me, actually. [He suddenly paused, realizing something.]

Anyway, how long were you watching me sleep?

[winces]

Thirty hours, [ she responds in a dry, dull tone. she withdraws her hand when he shoos her away, but she doesn't lean or step back. ] And I'll stop acting like your nanny when you stop acting like a child.

[satsujinki]

I guess you can say I'm acting like a child the moment you want to fuss over me. [There was a look from the corners of his eyes as he stood up, dusting his pants off. Shiki made his way over to his mounted telescope, at that.]

Sleeping by an open fire is probably the safest risk I'm taking, tonight.

[winces]

Oh, don't you blame this on me! [ she huffs, cheeks puffing out a little. now who's acting like a child? ] It's not my fault you need someone to take care of you.

[ she marches over, hands on her hips. ]

What's this about more risks, hm??

[satsujinki]

I've done just fine. If you're talking about my anemic spells--they're barely an issue.

[It was a downright lie, but there was no point in worrying further Olivia by saying, 'I know I could die at any time, but I'm fine with it.']

The bigger risk is me being outside while there's super-powered warriors running about, throwing their weight around without a care for others.

[He muttered irritably, turning on the HUD for Rick's device--looking to see if it picked up on anything.]

[winces]

[ olivia makes a low, understanding sound in the back of her throat. almost unconsciously she glances around, half-expecting said super-powered warriors to come crashing through, waving their worth around. ]

There are quite a lot of them, aren't there? [ she muses, almost to herself. there is a rueful tone to her words, but she does her best not to let her insecurities drag things down. ]

Maybe, next time, you might see about partnering up with someone. That might alleviate some of the worries, hm?

[satsujinki]

[Shiki caught Olivia looking around. Realizing what he said, he lowered his head and sighed inwardly. For once, he was the one thinking of someone else in that worrisome, overly concerned way. She had to have been like him, worried that things could go poorly because of brutes.]

It's easy if I just stay outside of the crowds.

[He added, one brow lifted-- Even if he was worried she felt a touch of fear, Shiki figured Olivia was tough enough to get by.] Unlike you, I don't stand out--so, I can stick to myself a bit easily.

[winces]

[ she frowns a little at that, feeling mildly self-conscious. ]

I don't stand out, [ she murmurs, and perhaps even a tinge of that sounds bitter about it. she certainly doesn't think she's anything remarkable. ]

[satsujinki]

[Shiki creased his brows. It seemed he had the time to collect all the necessary ingredients for a scowl and used them all up for Olivia's sake.]

Give me a break. Put a beautiful woman in any crowd and I'll tell you where everyone's attention is going to be.

[He thought about it in the meanest way, neglecting to remember Olivia's tendency to modesty and submissiveness--]

As if anyone would look away so easily.

[winces]

[ she can feel her face burn with every word he says, and somehow the careless, callous way he flings each of them out only makes the situation that much more embarrassing. ]

D-Do you really think so?! [ her voice rises up to a squeak, and if he were to look he'll find her eyes drawn to the ground, wide and seemingly panicked. she can feel her heart flutter wildly, but this is shiki, and he's so confusing sometimes, and so she isn't entirely sure whether she can even take him seriously or not.

but oh gosh it's a nice thought, isn't it? ]

[Not a stranger to weird behavior like that, Shiki could only feel his irritation build up further. There was something offensive about someone blatantly ignoring their own good looks and Olivia looked as if she didn't believe Shiki at all, at first. He tried to restrain his words a little, falling short.]

You can't be serious. Don't tell me--you don't realize you look just like a pop idol?

There's got to be a limit to being clueless.

[winces]

[ her expression blanks for a moment. ] What's a pop idol?

[ a goddess of fireworks... maybe........?!

but in any case, she just shakes her head, looking mildly insulted. ]

W-Who's clueless? You're the one sleeping by fire!

[satsujinki]

That's being careless--not clueless.

[He gestured to the bright coals, giving Olivia an arch look.]

I know I'll burst into flames if I roll through it. I thought you were just ignoring the obvious.

[winces]

It's clearly not that obvious if I don't notice it!
