PLAYER EVENT ★ HELIOLOGY

INTRODUCTION.

It's difficult to tell time without the presence of a sun or moon. There are no stars. The world is in constant blackness, the heavens barely visible from below and the only light artificial. It's been like this for months.

Suddenly, those who expressed interest in observing the sun (or lack thereof) will all at once receive a text message on their ALASTAIR jewellery from 82736775:

Get your shit and go look at the sky. Now's the time. If you need me, I'm around.
It's time to get to work.

OBSERVATION.

Find the highest point you can and point the telescopes at the sky. Should be easy, right?

Be mindful that there are still guards patrolling the city, looking for escaped prisoners, and some citizens would be very happy to tip them off to your presence. There are still animals in the forests to contend with, and there are still nosey citizens who may ask you too many questions. There are also your fellow ALASTAIR agents, who may not be very willing to share the spot they already staked out before you just showed up.

People and animals aren't all you need to look out for, either. Seven hours after the observation starts, there is a lightning storm. It lasts for 30 minutes, bolts of electricity arcing across the sky. It might be a good idea to scurry down someplace lower when this happens -- you know what they say about lightning and height.

82736775 doesn't contact anyone after the initial text, so observers are free to give up whenever they decide they've been sitting out in the freezing dark for long enough.

[ note: even if you didn't sign up, feel free to tag in! your character won't have a telescope but that doesn't mean they can't mingle. ]

[ Like any good yacht, Korra really leaves a wake.

Asami shakes her head and smiles fondly at the long staircase, earthbent right in the sloping ground, leading up to the top of the butte. If she had any doubts where Korra had gone... she starts to climb the stairs, carefully adjusting the basket hooked over her elbow so that it's covered by her cloak—a handy purchase, as it turned out, considering nobody here had ever heard of umbrellas.

The rain is just starting to sprinkle when she makes it to the top of the butte and finds Korra tucked away under an outcropping of rock. ]

Hey, Korra! [ She smiles brightly and ducks underneath the overhang, pushing her hood down from over her head. As usual, her hair looks perfect despite the hood and rain. ] I brought some tea and food. Are you thirsty?

[Turning the telescope around with her finger isn't the most responsible use of her metalbending and is probably giving Rick some nonsensical readings. Good thing Asami's voice distracts her from that.]

Hey. [It’s the first time a smile’s been on her face since setting up her little camp and it’s just as warm as her glowing lantern.] Didn’t think I’d see you out in the rain.

[Korra scoots over on her bedroll, putting the telescope back in place. (At least she thinks it’s in place.)] Yeah, please. That smells really good. The junk I brought should have been thrown out weeks ago.

[Stale jerky. Yuck.]

[ Korra... please take care of the delicate machinery. You'll give Asami a heart attack if it breaks. ]

I thought you could use a little company. [ Or she just... wanted to see Korra, but that feels somehow telling to admit. With a smile, Asami sets the basket down and sheds her cloak so that it has a chance to dry. Then she takes a seat next to Korra, tucking her legs to the side as she opens the basket and starts unpacking its contents.

The tea comes first, in a little ceramic teapot, then cups and cloth napkins. She leaves the food—fruits and breads and cheeses, already sliced, since those turned out to be the most portable—in the basket, and shakes her head amusedly at Korra's stale jerky. ]

The tea might be a little cold. [ She sounds a little sheepish. It took her a little longer to find Korra than she was expecting. ]

You thought right. [But now she can stop messing around with the telescope.] Even Tenzin's meditations lessons had at least something going on.

[Korra takes the wet coat and curls a hook of stone from her "roof" to hang it right next to the lantern. Her mood's improved tenfold and Korra crosses her legs so she can lean over; easier to let her eyes get a chance to devour the food a little. And if it means she's a little closer to Asami, well she didn't find anything wrong with that.]

Let me take care of the tea. [It takes a few moments of holding the small teapot to get the warm aroma in the air.] This is really thoughtful of you.

[Now if she can just tear her smiling face away from looking at Asami before the teapot begins to steam a little too much...]
