INTRODUCTION. It's difficult to tell time without the presence of a sun or moon. There are no stars. The world is in constant blackness, the heavens barely visible from below and the only light artificial. It's been like this for months. Suddenly, those who expressed interest in observing the sun (or lack thereof) will all at once receive a text message on their ALASTAIR jewellery from 82736775: Get your shit and go look at the sky. Now's the time. If you need me, I'm around. It's time to get to work. OBSERVATION. Find the highest point you can and point the telescopes at the sky. Should be easy, right? Be mindful that there are still guards patrolling the city, looking for escaped prisoners, and some citizens would be very happy to tip them off to your presence. There are still animals in the forests to contend with, and there are still nosey citizens who may ask you too many questions. There are also your fellow ALASTAIR agents, who may not be very willing to share the spot they already staked out before you just showed up. People and animals aren't all you need to look out for, either. Seven hours after the observation starts, there is a lightning storm. It lasts for 30 minutes, bolts of electricity arcing across the sky. It might be a good idea to scurry down someplace lower when this happens -- you know what they say about lightning and height. 82736775 doesn't contact anyone after the initial text, so observers are free to give up whenever they decide they've been sitting out in the freezing dark for long enough. [ note: even if you didn't sign up, feel free to tag in! your character won't have a telescope but that doesn't mean they can't mingle. ]

[She mutters as she holds her telescope up, peering through it with a renewed grip on her telescope.]

You're just mad someone else is in your spot.

I'm not mad. I'm just annoyed, is all. You would feel that way too if I barged into your spot.

[He says, peering through the telescope with a renewed determination to find something before she does.]

I would consider it a team effort.

[She says as she's rather relaxed about all of it, leaning back.]

Do you usually work alone back home?

[headlining]

I do, actually. [A beat as he squints.] I mean, technically I have coworkers and all, but we don't rely on each other to do the work. Reporters tend to look out for their own stories.

[beyourrock]

[She pulls her gaze away from her telescope to regard the man for a moment.]

Did you ever work with anyone on any stories?

[headlining]

[He shakes his head.]

No. Unless you count my editor, but all he does is nitpick at things I've already written.

[beyourrock]

Then this is the perfect opportunity to work on your teamwork capabilities.

[She says cheerfully as she looks off into the sky with her telescope once more, almost squinting.]

How long have you been up here?

[headlining]

[Keats rolls his eyes, looking more like a grumpy teenager who's been told to play nice with others at a party more than the serious adult journalist he's supposed to be.]

Not too long. [A frown creases his face.] I've been running around all night trying to find a decent spot.

[beyourrock]

And it's quite a fine spot!

[She says rather cheerfully, pulling her face from her telescope. Pearl chuckles.]

You're acting like this is some kind of race.

[headlining]

Well, isn't it? I mean, what if someone finds something before I do? They get all the credit, and I look like a fool.

[His statement sounds like it should come from someone much younger than he is.]

I don't want all this to be for nothing, you know?

[beyourrock]

I certainly don't see it as a race against other people.

[Her expression falls as she glances out across their surroundings, at the little blips of fire-lit areas in the distance.]

If anything I see it as a race against time.

[headlining]

[That makes his draw his head back from the telescope, turning his head to give Pearl a confused look.]

How so?

[beyourrock]

Well these people can't last without the sun forever.

[She meets his gaze.]

Besides, would you want to live in a world of darkness forever?

[headlining]

[He doesn't answer that for a moment, instead breaking his gaze with her to glance up at the dark sky. It's weird, how long he's been here, and how normal the darkness seems, now.]

No. I wouldn't. [He sighs.] I may practically be a hermit at times, but I couldn't survive without a little warm light every now and then.
