INTRODUCTION. It's difficult to tell time without the presence of a sun or moon. There are no stars. The world is in constant blackness, the heavens barely visible from below and the only light artificial. It's been like this for months. Get your shit and go look at the sky. Now's the time. If you need me, I'm around. It's time to get to work. OBSERVATION. Find the highest point you can and point the telescopes at the sky. Should be easy, right? |

"Britannia" and "Logres" are very old names for our country.
[ In her history lessons as a child, with her tutors. They always assumed Alice wasn't paying attention, but she was more in tuned to her school lessons than she let on. It wasn't that unusual, there were people here from various countries and times, so the old names of England aren't exactly earth-shattering. ]
When I first met you, I had a fleeting hope that, perhaps, we could come from the same time. I'm sure you understand, don't you? It's been a very long time since I've been in Oxford; it sounds as if you haven't seen your home in a long time, as well. I must have sounded silly back then. It isn't as if I have any sort of national pride, and yet it is pleasant to talk to other Englishmen.
[ After all, she never heard what happened to her family's legacy. To make it worse, she wasn't sure what became of the children in Houndsditch. ]

[it probably is quite silly, but Saber feels a deeper bond exists because she too is a child of England. had Alice been alive during her own time she would have fallen under her protection. she may have failed Camelot, but she will see to it that no terrible harm befalls one of her own here. after all, The Once and Future King knows no boundaries of time and space.]
I am sorry to disappoint you, Alice.
no subject
I've been disappointed and led astray by many in my life, Miss Saber.
[ Betrayed, especially. ]
You hardly hold a candle to any of them. I'll never have that resolution, I suppose I should accept it.
[ But she can't, she may never with the children of Houndsditch and if it drives her further into darkness, so be it. Alice thinks she deserves it. ]

it is a difficult thing to accept, to find someone else who has suffered the same pain and walked the same path. the events that unfolded may not have been the same, but the feeling upon realizing you've been deceived never changes. it is not something she would wish upon her worst enemy, and most certainly not another young girl like Alice. her life has been much harder than any girl her age's should, of that Saber is certain.]
It is not my place to plead for you to cling to the hope that you may some day find the answers you seek, but it is my earnest with that you might reach a resolution of some sort, and find some measure of peace in it.
no subject
[ Had she not been so upset with herself, Alice wouldn't said such a thing, at all. Anything like that is too much information and it makes her vulnerable. Alice turns away, adjusting the blanket tighter around her body. She doesn't express her thoughts that she is undeserving of peace to her. It's odd, even after being with her friends in in ALASTAIR that they have expressed wishing Alice well. Her inability to forgive herself is amplified even more after upsetting Sieglinde so badly at the tea party. Resolution would be nice, if only for those she left behind. ]
Unfortunately, there are many things wrong with London, within the slums of it like Whitechapel. The world is filled with cruel people who don't bat an eye at harming the most innocent and vulnerable. I would hope another would step in my place and do what I wasn't able to do. At least Oxford had good people, like my father -- maybe it still does. Your words are kind, but I'm afraid I can't find peace until those I left behind find it before me.

[ah, but isn't this the pot calling the kettle black? but Saber can say these things because she knows, she lived her entire life for the sake of others and thus she did not truly live a single day at all. the girl Arturia died long ago, all that's left is the broken shell of a king who once was, but is no more.]
Nor can you continue to punish yourself for the misfortune of others. I understand your plight, your desire to see justice brought to those who have been wrongfully slighted.
[it happens all too often, it's sickening really. the amount of injustice in the world.]
There is never a shortage of suffering in the world, Alice, you can not possibly hope to shoulder the weight of it all. It would sooner crush you, a broken butterfly upon the wheel.
no subject
[ She's surprised with herself, after all of this omission, after Alice clung so desperately to every bit of her past life. Any notion of her father's wisdom to guide her through these times. But, even then, Alice felt a punishment or at least to be crushed by the weight of her guilt. She'd live for others if it meant it could undo the damage done to those children. Alice sucks in a breath, her eyesight blurring momentarily as if she was about to cry. Along with this, Sieglinde's state hung so heavily over her head and served as a reminder of her failure. ]
Would you know that plight, Miss Saber?
[ Even a little of it? There had been many times before Alice had dismissed anyone outright from saying that they knew how she felt. However, in this conversation, it was a bit more sentimental. She bottled down the urge to burst into tears, now pulling out her sister's key. She wishes she could explain more why it was deserving and what happened. In the end, she felt ashamed. Alice finally turns back to Saber; she observes her, as she holds her sister's old key in her hands. ]
It almost sounds like you know that feeling all too well. I hope some day, I can have a better conversation with you about our homes without sounding so dreary, myself. You're always welcome to sit with me, if I haven't frightened you off by now. I've already heard of you, you know, just small bits. ALASTAIR has odd choices in recruits, some of them very grandiose.
[ Which was... a gentle way of describing Gilgamesh. More so, Alice scoffs at herself for even humoring the idea. Though, even when Lancer explained why there were others named after weapons, then maybe, just maybe. Alice wouldn't say it outright, rather, hint at it, innocently enough. ]
England isn't all that terrible, I'm sure, even if I haven't been anywhere outside of London and Oxford. I hope, someday, you can see it again, for all of its goodness and see good people, rather than return to it, just to see it rise from trouble.
no subject
[something terrible happened to Alice, she's not quite sure what, but definitely something defining enough to have warped a mind so young into believing that the suffering of others is her responsibility.
as the conversation shifts back over to Saber herself, she seems a bit remorseful.]
Many people suffered due to my own inadequacy. I was entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring the prosperity of many lives, but in the end I failed that duty. It is ... a difficult thing to cope with; failure. It wreaks havoc on us all.
[would Camelot have flourished under the rule of another king? she may never truly know the answer to such a question now. all she can do is try to forgive herself for her past mistakes, lord knows it's not an easy process. she hopes Alice can try to forgive herself, as well.
ah... there's something she didn't quite expect to hear. Alice has already heard of her?? to what- or rather whom, is she referring? another Servant? ... grandoise. oh lord... please say it isn't so...!
Saber's expression twists with concern, suddenly turning to look over at her in surprise.]
What have you heard? With whom have you been conversing?
no subject
Which was why there was no choice to do what she did and she never regretted it. She only wishes she was quicker enough to stop him; at least the minds of the children would be intact, to some degree. She doesn't say to Saber she doesn't know the extent of what happened. An irrational fear envelopes her -- she fears being ridiculed and belittled she didn't do that much. At that point, Alice was too tired to cry. She only hoped Sieglinde would forgive her.
All she can do is just shake her head. The guilt may inflame her madness, but Alice doesn't care. It's deserved, in her opinion. It's easier for her to turn her sympathy to Saber since she still doesn't know how to process positive attention directed at her with good intentions. ]
I don't think that could be the case. So things were not how you wanted; you did what you could, I'm sure. Failures and oversights are hard to put to rest, but what matters is someone's good intentions. Even with failures aside, you will be remembered for having a good heart, when not many were as kind.
[ If it is actually true, if anything Gilgamesh is actually true. Still, Alice would test the waters, just to sate her own curiosity. As usual.
Alice lets out a small scoff. Legends aside, Saber, Lancer, and Arch -- all of these people had some ties to Gilgamesh, in some fashion. ]
Gilgamesh.
[ She says with a neutral tone, despite the urge to roll her eyes at mentioning his name. ]
But, to be fair, I rarely seek him out, much like anyone else I am discomforted by. He speaks highly of you as well as just as disdainfully. It's... gross, really. He said you were a great king, once.
[ She adds in a hushed voice; Alice is careful not to say the name of which king. ]
Admittedly, I have a hard time believing that, considering where this claim comes from. Though... if it is true, then I stand by what I said to you.
no subject
Gilgamesh. that bastard. she wouldn't expect Alice to associate with someone like him... but it would seem that man has a habit of preying on innocent women. not only that, but he apparently doesn't know how to keep his big mouth shut on matters which do not concern him???? that much is clear. as far as the direction of the rest of this conversation.... he's gone and spilled the beans, hasn't he?
who the hell does he think he is?? the nature of their survival as Servants hinges upon the requirement that they keep their true names a secret. yet he feels there is no consequence to announcing his own true name to complete strangers, and now her's too?
THAT ENTITLED PIECE OF SHIT!!!!
Saber's expression twists with very evident frustration, clenching her jaw and gripping her knees tightly. finally after a long moment of internal shit talk, she speaks up without directly looking in Alice's direction.]
That vile excuse for a man had no right to speak on my behalf...
[if she didn't already want to kill him before this conversation, she most assuredly would be persuaded towards murder now.]
Judging from your words, I assume he spoke of more than just the matter of my status.
no subject
As he shouldn't speak on your behalf or any other woman's for that matter.
[ She curbs the rest of what she's heard and noted, remembering her sister's turmoil. It was as if she was listening to Lizzie's worries, all over again. Alice finds herself not being able to break eye contact with Saber. ]
Indeed, he has. It wasn't my intention to upset you, Saber, it was to try and reassure you, you have my apologies. However-
[ Alice draws a tired breath. She can't say she doesn't hope that this isn't the same as her sister and Bumby. She doesn't want to load Saber with her own discomfort with Gilgamesh; she doesn't need it right now. ]
I hope that you never fear putting him in line, in a matter of speaking. It's a shame I can't do it for you, as much as I would like to.
no subject
[it's that golden asshole who is once again the source of her ire, as always...
suddenly she realizes she is not the only person here who thinks of him disdainfully. her thoughts are redirected to the girl beside her and she lifts her gaze to survey Alice with great concern.]
Gilgamesh is extremely dangerous, it would be best if you avoided all contact with him completely.... though I know he can be a difficult man to evade once his interest is piqued.
[it doesn't help the man has zero concept of the meaning of the word no.]
Nevertheless you must never engage him. Leave that to me.
no subject
[ Alice has a lot of feelings on Gilgamesh, most of them wavering on the negative. She hasn't exactly forgiven him for calling her insane, especially. But this situation was starting to anger her for other reasons.
Mostly because of her sister and Bumby. Alice thought little of herself, but there were moments she was a proud person, like now. She adjusts the blanket as if it were like a collar, chin nearly up on the air. ]
I've managed myself so far without you -- not that I would disapprove of it. Though, I won't show restraint, either.
[ Which Saber has seen, Alice struggles to show restraint, if at all. ]
no subject
[she knows all too well what Gilgamesh is capable of, if pushed. and a lot of times it doesn't take hardly anything at all to 'push' him over the edge and into a murderous state of mind. at least it doesn't seem as though he's breached beyond anything mildly discomforting with the girl.... yet.]
Take it from someone who has experience in dealing with his... unwanted fixation.
