EVENT ★ MAT GATHERING

The investigations in the sungazing log have lead to a number of discoveries, including trace amounts of solar radiation and seemingly temporary lights in the sky that match no known star charts currently in Chantes. On the 15th, Rick will announce via the verdict over the network: the sun isn’t gone. un: 82736775The mystery of the disappearing sun might be clear, but that doesn’t mean the problem’s solved. Now’s the hard part: creating something that will dispel the darkness. Fortunately, with the right ingredients, science might be able to win the daylight back. All recruits will be encouraged to help with some good, old-fashioned teamwork and fetch quests. SCAVENGER HUNT The list is as follows:
As a side-mission for the cave items, it seems the 15th is also the only day of the year that the night-blooming cereus plants are open around the cavern entrances. These flowers must be handled very delicately or they’ll wither and die, and local insects of all shapes, sizes, and aggressiveness will be drawn to them, so collectors beware. These flowers will have no bearing on the sun solution, but the goblin church will ask outgoing adventurers to bring some back with them. These items may come into play in February depending on IC actions, but otherwise they make for some pretty decorations! And finally, a big thanks to ![]() |
Sieglinde Sullivan | OTA x2, Locked x9
[Sieglinde has had some strange conversations since she came to Chantes, but weirdly enough, some of the strangest have been with Ran. Some of the strangest would likely continue to be with Ran, because Sieglinde is... stuck. At least, that's the only explanation for why there are a pair of tiny feet, attached to kicking, stick thin legs, and the bottom half of a black dress sticking out of that crevice there. ... a little help, please?]
Mushrooms ☢ For Riza;
[Riza had been one of the first to help Sieglinde gather medical supplies in Chantes, accompanying her out to the forest edge. This time, though, instead of a donkey... Sieglinde is accompanied by a dog with a face made of exposed bone in contrast to the flesh, blood, and hair on the rest of its body. It, and Riza's company, has been most welcome- but now, there are mushrooms to think of.]
- Do you have gloves?
[She does, already pulling on a pair of slightly oversized leather gloves and eyeing the glowing mushrooms excitedly.]
Cereus Flowers ❀ For Gilgamesh;
[Sieglinde had initially planned only to contact Gilgamesh to inform him that she had finished with the magical grimoire he had lent her, just to request another. But the message had come, and the timing lent itself to an escort. She promised herself she would be much more on guard- that she wouldn't be taken in by the considerable charms she considered the King of Kings to possess.
Which was. Much harder when she was being carried by him, mind. But those less than pure distractions are momentarily forgotten at the sight of the field of white flowers in full bloom at the cave entrance despite the darkness all around them. Though she'd been halfway through a sentence, (an observation of why they ought to go look fo saltpeter when she could just make it)... she forgot to finish what she was saying, grip on Gilgamesh's shoulder tightening.]
Bat Guano ☣ For Alice;
[Not many people could have fun around ankle-deep bat guano, but then again, the both of them knew Sieglinde wasn't quite normal- and neither was Alice. As much as she wanted to wade in and start looking for choice bits, the older, the better, Sieglinde knew better than to put her feet anywhere near something that might lead to a higher risk of infection. She was rummaging in her bag for something to cover her shoes with, though, when she hears a heavy fluttering of wings, gaze darting upward. Obviously where there was guano, there was bats, but... didn't those wing beats sound a bit... heavy?]
Rock Salt ⚖ For Lea;
[While Sieglinde was quite interested in searching for some of the ingredients they'd been tasked to find, rock salt was... not one of them. Still, a job was a job, and she had volunteers to assist her... and perhaps she could try out a spell or two with it if she collected extra.]
It was around here somewhere...
[She'd found a vein during an earlier exploration, but. She frowns over the lantern she's holding in her lap, keeping Lea's hands free- which was only fair, since she was occupying one to carry her.]
Plutonic Rocks ⚛ For Kida;
[Though Sieglinde had avoided actually riding the creature that ALASTAIR had sent Masamune for her, the cave ended up neccesitating it. Astride the withers of the skull-faced canine, Sieglinde was slightly nervous, but Kida was reassuring, (Kida always was), and so she followed the older woman deeper into the caverns, fingers fisted tight in the beast's fur, the light of the glowing lantern strapped to its side slowly eclipsed by the glow of something else. As they approached, Sieglinde's eyes widened, taking in the rock, the crystals-]
It's beautiful...
Potassium Nitrate ⚠ For Levi;
[Once she'd figured out that "potassium nitrate" was just a fancy "science" way of saying "Saltpeter", Sieglinde had stopped looking for it. Why look when she could just make it herself? But in order to make it...]
Here we are.
[In front of a field of bat shit. With the person she's roped into assisting, pointing proudly at their find as if it means something.]
Cave Minnows ☠ For Alisha;
[Everyone's busy, and everyone's scrambling to get what they need- so it's not hard to contact some of the people she knows, those who would be willing to accompany her where she needs to go. The skull-faced dog that accompanied her was staring into the water, glowing eyes locked on the movement of the fish beneath the surface, but Sieglinde is staring down, arms crossed, before she turns to Alisha.]
Have you fishing experience?
Glowworms ☼ For Archer
[Thanks for lending out your servant, Rin. Sieglinde is trying hard not to let herself look down and to the right, because honestly, that armor left nothing to the imagination, but thankfully something else catches her eye. Tracks in the ground, like holes bored through the stone... and a glow overhead that draws her gaze.]
- what is that?
Science for Personal Gain! | OTA
[It wasn't every day you have a chance to get a hold of this much saltpeter... so of course she'd give some to this Rick person, but she had her own experiments to think of as well. Her own cure to experiment on until she finds the answer. She's had bat guano collected before stewing in water overnight, and now comes... the fun part.
She's sitting by a stream near the cave entrance, gown spread out beneath her, hair done up nicely, a rather prim picture thanks to Sebastian's butler skills despite the fact that she was wearing oversize leather gloves and... sifting through wet bat shit and pulling out crystals with a trimphant Ah-ha.
You know you want to help out.]
Someone Catch that... Dog? | OTA
[While you're exploring the caverns, crawling the tunnels, do you see those two pinpricks of red in the dark? It gets closer, closer, until hints of pale ivory appear, the outline of a skull, the sound of padding feet, a low panting. It gets closer, and closer, until a voice rings out from the darkness behind it-]
Isengrim, get back here this instant!
DOG
no subject
It seems the canine wasn't expecting a flying tackle either, because it turns it's skull-plated face... only for said bones to collide against Papyrus' bones... and send them tumbling.
During which said canine latches on to one of Papyrus' femurs. Yu... m?
In the distance, a surprised gasp- give her a second, she'll catch up- tottering over with a small lantern in hand, eyes wide.]
Are you alright- Isengrim. Let go of him-
no subject
I GOT HIM!!
[ Sure, he's being gnawed on a little, but... He caught the dog!! FINALLY!! FINALLY HE CAUGHT A DOG!!!!!!
He's so proud of himself, he doesn't even care about the slow 1HP loss happening with every moment Isengrim has his femur in its mouth. ]

He's more surprised to see the injured girl from before sitting so close to the entrance and... really digging through it. ]
What are you doing?
[ it looks like she brought it with her on purpose and got it wet, too... gross sieglinde. ]
no subject
Retrieving saltpeter.
[She pulls out a small chunk of crystal from the guano, pulling her gloved hand from the wet mess and holding it up for inspection proudly.
As if she was holding a diamond, honestly.]

[ thank you, mr. dictionary. The unusual expression on her face for that moment goes unnoticed to him, inexperienced in socializing as he is; he simply takes a few steps closer, seeming curious. ]

And thus Gilgamesh, despite his reservations about reaching out to others, went off in search of anyone who looked as though they required assistance. Sieglinde made it easy enough to find her, and to this promising young girl he proved very obliging; when it became obvious she could not make the trek on her own, he took her into arms without complaint and they set off. That was that.
It had been a little distracting for him, too. She was very soft and very warm, and though Gilgamesh had nothing of a nurturer's instinct, he holds her close anyway. Holds her tight as if the world could not take her from him. It may be because Sieglinde was among the few who treated him with a degree of manners that he looks upon her more fondly. He remembers slights against him, but he remembers kindnesses all the more, for how rarely they came.
When they reach the field, he stops for a moment, transfixed. How could he not be?]
Flowers...
[As it turns out, even a tyrant could find beauty in the simplest of things.]
no subject
But there were those who would carry her, so she could see things like this her own feet couldn't take her to. Her gaze lifts to the darkness above them then back down to the field of flowers all turning their faces upward, delicate white petals almost glowing in the darkness.]
They are blooming so well despite the sun...
[She knew all the plants and herbs of her home village, some that weren't native only from books... but she had never seen ones like this before.]
Have you seen it's like before?
[He had seen centuries, and she barely a decade- so she doubted there was much left in the world entirely new to him. Still, she asked.]
no subject
Gilgamesh shakes his head at her question, wading into the veritable ocean of blossoms and soaking up the overwhelming scenery. He lowers himself to his knees to set Sieglinde down, so she can see it too. So she can feel the softness of the petals, catch the soothing scent.
He moves to join her and reaches for a flower head, only to stop at least second.]
Oh... I think these will require gentler hands than mine. The blooms are delicate.
[He looks to Sieglinde expectantly. He won't treat her like a child, but rather a tiny adult.]
Well, let us put you to work, then. You know how to handle such things, right?

Not much, unfortunately. [She takes off her gloves and armor on her arms, kneeling down by edge of the water.] I suppose I'll simply have to learn on the job.
no subject
Her eyes were following the darting glows of the fish beneath the surface... quite quick little things.]
Perhaps we should herd them...
[It worked with cattle!]
no subject
If we had more time perhaps, but with how big this lake is, herding them could prove difficult. [Although honestly she can't say she knows much about herding either. One thing she was familiar with at least—] Fishing is like another form of hunting though, wouldn't you say?

I have some handkerchiefs I can wrap around my hands. [Which she proceeds to fish out of her bag now.] Though I admit I don't understand how mushrooms will help us restore the sun.
[Science is meaningless to her, despite all the alchemists she hangs around with on a daily basis. (Meanwhile, Sieglinde's animal companion is being cautiously sniffed by Riza's animal companion, a black and white dog several times smaller.)]
no subject
Here, take one for your dominant hand.
[Mushrooms weren't so delicate that one needed two hands to harvest them.]
- I believe it is not the mushrooms themselves, but.
[She poked one of the caps, hard, enough that the glow dimmed slightly where she put pressure before gradually returning.]
That which makes them emit light.
no subject
[Back in her bag go the handkerchiefs, passed over for another day, and instead she takes the glove offered to her by Sieglinde and slides it on. The fit is snug, almost overly so, but she can shoulder the discomfort for the next hour or so if it'll contribute to the larger problem currently plaguing Chantes.
She watches Sieglinde prod at the mushroom, observes the resultant dimming and brightening.]
Is there a good way of extracting whatever it is that causes the reaction? Or will crushing the mushrooms be enough?
[How do herbs and essences.]

science!
Eventually he makes his way to the caves and sees Sieglinde doing some experiment of sort. He approaches from the side, not intending to startle her with his sudden appearance.]
Doing science, Sieglinde?
no subject
Greetings, Dr. Wells!
[She would greet him properly, but. She's digging for something in there.]
This cave has proven a prime location to harvest saltpeter!
[Or "potassium nitrate", however modern you want to go about that.]

Lithe and very slender, she was stronger than she looked, able to help Sieglinde by carrying her with extra precaution with Sieglinde strapped, if needed. Once they've arrived, Alice doesn't bother to hide the disgust. ]
Of all the things... what on earth would we need with any of this?
[ As far as the sound of wings above, yes, she hears, but frankly, it doesn't bother her. ]
no subject
There's saltpeter in there.
[Pointed out into the bed of guano, pulling out an empty glass jar to gather material with, at least, pulling her gaze back down from the dark ceiling and fluttering of wings.]

For the time being, he's been assigned to help Sieglinde, and that's all well and good. If he notices her discomfort over his attire (he's already had this conversation with Masamune once, and he doesn't want to again), he doesn't show it.
Looking up at the source of the lights, his mouth thins. ]
Worms. They seem to have made a nesting place in the stone.
[ Which didn't bode well for transporting them, actually. ]
no subject
There might be some. Inappropriate looking though. (He was a very well muscled specimen up close, after all.)
She frowns up at the worms, though, then looks back down at the scored stone beneath their feet. That was... potentially troublesome.]
Is there any way you could knock one loose?
[Examining one closer would be beneficial, first off... but they were sort of on the ceiling. Archer, though, she'd seen in action- long-distance action.]

sorry this is so late!
[As they make their way through the cave, Sieglinde holding up the lantern while Lea runs his free hand over the wall nearby to feel for inconsistencies in the rock, he glances at her, then at the shadows the lantern casts across the walls.]
Rock salt seems like kind of a strange shopping list, don't'cha think? [He scrapes the nail of one thumb against the cave wall, but it seems it's still just rock, no salt here.] I wonder what they want it for. Pretzels, maybe? Heh, that'd be nice.
