CHARACTERS: Trafalgar Law
kikoku and Olivia
winces
DATE: the day after the storm
WARNINGS: possible discussion of those lovely Nalawi corpses
SUMMARY: DOCTOR ADVENTURES
[Law's waiting at the dock as promised, and he's looking decidedly underdressed. He's got his hat and jeans on, but that's about it. There's an ALASTAIR jacket hanging from one of the pylons next to wear he's sitting, though, so that's probably his. He's looking out over the water at what's left of the storm, but when he hears Olivia approach he'll turn his gaze on her.]
Ah, Olivia-ya. You're here.
[As she gets closer she may notice that the jacket as well as the jeans from the knees down are noticeably damp. Law's not had a good day. He doesn't even have shoes. In any case, he's picking up his jacket and walking off the dock to meet her. He's taller and more muscular that you might expect someone who is ostensibly a doctor to be. But he was already not selling the "doctor" image with... everything else about him, really.]
We should get going, there's a lot of ground to cover.

U-Um, yes. Thank you again for taking me under your tutelage, Mr. Law. [ ?? did they even introduce themselves lmfao i can't remember ]
no subject
[So don't thank him, that's gross. It's not like he's a nice guy or anything! He starts to trudge onward across the sandy beach, but then pauses to turn around again and scrutinize Olivia a bit harder, which is probably just going to make her anxiety worse. She's flushed, which can indicate fever sometimes, but...]
But if you're going to be flustered the whole time, don't come. [This rudeass bitch.]
[Technically no, he got her name from her username and I forgot. So lets just say I DIDN'T forget that and he did introduce himself. A+ RP good game guys.]
no subject
suddenly she stands upright, rigid, and though that doesn't make her any more imposing, she is at least not at risk of caving in on herself. ]
I-I won't, I promise...!
[ rather hastily, she lifts her hands to start lightly slapping at her traitorous cheeks, clearly attempting to get a hold of herself — but that really only seems to be making them redder, olivia pls? ]
no subject
So, you said you're a healer. What all are you normally capable of? Healing magic isn't terribly common where I'm from.
[Right down to business.]
no subject
Initially I was only able to heal very minor things — cuts, bruises, mostly flesh wounds. But recently I've been able to do more — broken bones, deeper gashes, even injured internal organs... It takes a lot of concentration, though, and [ here she blushes again in embarrassment ] I'm still learning...
no subject
If you can heal injuries like that instantaneously, that's already invaluable, regardless of how much you may be able to access right now. Even a minor cut can be dangerous if it's allowed to get infected.
[Spoken like a true doctor with an insanely pessimistic disposition. Law's stopping now, looking out at the water towards an object that's close enough to the shore to see, but just far enough out that it's entirely unclear what it might be. Could be a coconut. Could be a head. Could be something else.]
Olivia-ya. Can you wade out there to see what that is?
[He'd do it himself except he'd probably drown embarrassingly in waist-high water.]
no subject
she turns to him, blinking curiously. ]
...can you not swim, Law?
no subject
[How can he word this in the best way that will not make him look like an idiot.]
I know how to swim. Where I'm from, there's something called a devil fruit. If you eat one you gain a special ability, but sea water robs you of your strength.
[It's funnier once you know that the place Law comes from is like 80% islands and ocean.]
no subject
then twice.
then, in a quiet voice, she ventures, ]
But you didn't eat one...
[ what will the sea water take from you?! ]
no subject
I did. That's why I can't go in the water. I learned how to swim before I ate the devil fruit.
I just wanted to clarify that it wasn't like I couldn't handle two feet of water in theory.
[All you did was be confusing, Law.]
no subject
Ohh, okay, I think I get it. [ it's not that he was worried he'd lose his special ability, but that after eating the fruit, it's made him weak to sea water, right? SEE, SHE'S QUICK... ]
You stay here then — I'll let you know if I see anything.
[ that said, she reaches up to undo the ties of her cloak and gracefully slips it off. this she folds up then wordlessly hands over to him because, well, it'd get sand otherwise! left in just her dancer attire, she wanders closer to the shoreline, taking a few tentative steps into the water. her hands come up instinctively around her arms, a shiver running down her spine. since the storm, the waters have been as cold as they are treacherous. ]
no subject
[Yeah, he'll take that cloak without complaint. And while Olivia is wading out into the water, Law is just going to use his ability to extract all the remaining water from the garment.
It does involve Law mumbling "Room" and then "Shambles" to himself, but Olivia will probably be too distracted to notice. Gotta focus on her investigation of what is, upon closer inspection, definitely just a large coconut.]
What is it?
[Is what he'll call over to her when she reaches it.]
no subject
she picks the coconut up, relief and exhaustion causing her chest to feel bubbly and light, and holds it up high over her head when she turns to show him. ]
Look—!
[ there is a squeal then, when her footing along with the ebb and flow of the waves causes her to misstep and down she goes, falling back into the waist-deep water. ]
no subject
Only to immediately be toppled by the physical weight of it, apparently. Law takes maybe two steps towards the water, but he isn't going in after her, sorry. He isn't that nice.]
Don't drown, Olivia-ya.
[Said with zero enthusiasm or concern.]
no subject
I-I'm okay! [ she insists, and certainly she hasn't drowned or gotten injured or anything. truth be told, all that's wounded is her pride.
it's evident in the brightness of her cheeks as she slowly wades back towards the short, hands wrapped tight around her arms in an effort to stave off the shivers. it's a fruitless endeavor, as her entire body seems to shudder one second after the other. it's a good thing law dried up her cloak for her...! ]
Sorry... it was a lot heavier than I expected.
no subject
[Said with a tiny hint of amusement. Meanwhile he hands her back her freshly dry cloak. At least with that slip up it's all the better he expended the effort to dry it out.]
Though I suppose maybe coconuts aren't commonplace where you're from.
no subject
No, not really, [ she admits, now that she's finally running the cloak over herself in an effort to get drier. ] Are they for you?
no subject
[And now that Olivia is back, he's going to continue walking.]
Infrequent enough that Bepo gets excited whenever we come across one, though.
no subject
A pirate? Truly? [ her hands flutter up to cover her mouth, excitement written all over her widened eyes.
she's heard so many stories about pirates! they're some of her favorites! ]
What sort of pirate things have you done? Who is Bepo? Is he a pirate too? Oh! Is he your parrot companion?!
no subject
Bepo is my navigator and first mate, so yes he's a pirate. He's a polar bear minkman.
[He starts to continue but then realizes Olivia probably doesn't know what that means.] That is, he's as intelligent as you and me but has the body of a polar bear on two legs.
[He'll hold off on tackling the subject of all that he's done since he's fairly sure the idea of a talking polar bear will be wildly entertaining to Olivia.]
no subject
and then she pauses. ]
What's a polar bear?
no subject
Ah, it's a type of bear that's native to cold regions with pure white fur. [He's hoping he doesn't have to explain what a bear is too.]
no subject
Oh, wow... They sound very pretty! Do you have a picture of your friend?
no subject
I don't. Even if I had, I'd probably have lost it in the storm. [He considers a moment, before additionally conceding;] He's a good friend. And his fur is very soft.
[He coughs and changes the subject because he can't risk revealing that he's a real person with feelings any further.]
Do you have any friends from home with us?
no subject
she is a bit sad when he suddenly switches the conversation over to her, but she comforts herself with the knowledge that it won't be a very long derailment.
she shakes her head. ]
No, it's just me. [ it's a little lonely at times, but... but she's made some good friends here, too. ]
no subject
We're two of a kind then, I suppose. [Sizing her up, again. More specifically her outfit.]
What exactly did you... do with yourself, back home? For a job.
no subject
pls don't look at her... ]
Oh, um. I was a dancer. [ am... ] I was part of a theater troupe that traveled around performing for people!
no subject
You're surprisingly shy for a performer, Olivia-ya.
[But then again, most people would say that he's surprisingly unfriendly for a doctor, so who is he to judge.]
Why do you want to learn from me, then?
no subject
B-Because I've never been a healer, not in any capacity. I knew basic first aid, but that was it... I don't have a lot to offer the team here, so I want to try learning as much as I can. And part of that is learning from the best.
no subject
I'm sure there are better doctors here than me. A lot of what I know is self-taught.
[Hmph hmph!!!]
But if you want to learn from me I've already agreed to, anyway. [He turns away a moment, stopping in their leisurely walk to scoop up another coconut.]
When we get back to Oska I'll look in the library for some textbooks to help us out.
no subject
Would you really? Thank you so much for going through all that trouble for me...!
no subject
I told you I'd help you learn. How else did you think I was going to do it?
no subject
[ look, she's not used to book-learning, okay! ]
I've always just been taught in the field... You know — hands on!
no subject
[A pause, before a hint of a smile breaks across Law's face. It would be nice if the expression wasn't so blatantly sinister.]
I mean, I suppose we could encourage people to be more reckless.
no subject
Don't look so pleased by that prospect, [ she huffs. ] We can always practice on each other, though, can't we?
[ yep, someone's former teachers seems to have had the habit of using themselves (and her) as test dummies... ]
no subject
The marines call me the "Surgeon of Death" for a reason, you know.
[Then he frowns a moment before dropping the coconut on the ground and unsheathing his sword. There's barely any resistance when he cuts through the fruit, it almost looked like he didn't actually contact it at all. But surely he must have, right? Once he puts the sword back in the sheath he crouches down to pick up the suspiciously perfect halves before handing one to Olivia.]
But no. How would I be able to coach you while one or both of us were actively injured?
no subject
Well — we'll figure something out, don't worry!
