EVENT ★ THE FRACKING FIELDS
THE EARTHQUAKE ![]() One day, early in the morning before the mechanical rooster at Amos Zephyr's farm even crows, there's a sudden rumble in the distance. Perdition's Rest shakes and the ground roils, knocking things off shelves and startling the mechanical horses in their pen. Look out the window and you'll see Qorral locals blearily stepping out into the street, murmuring anxiously amongst themselves: Earthquake. Ever since the argecite mines started to dry up, the Qorral colonists have been turning to fracking in order to pull all available argecite out of the planet as quickly as possible. The technique has caused more and more earthquakes to shake the planet, though the fracking fields are far enough away from the town that damage is minimal. However, the fields and mines aren't as lucky. The mayor rushes out into the street, his assistant and Sheriff Holladay flanking him, and asks for any willing heroes and adventurers (that means you!) to venture out to the fracking fields and assess the damages. Though the tunnels aren't being actively mined, there were likely miners and other workmen inside, so there will be rescue needed as well. Get your provisions ready and hop on the train: you're going to work. THE FRACKING FIELDS ![]() The fracking fields are a wide open swath of land peppered with looming, iron machines going on for miles. These machines are the Qorral's final attempt at scraping the last remnants of argecite from the planet before abandoning the colony and moving on for good. This destructive practice is causing obvious instability to the planet, but they don't seem to care. This is what their species does: seeks out argecite, mines it, and moves on. The fields are dry and dead, with no plants around -- and now, after the earthquake, there are sinkholes. The iron machines are falling into the sinkholes, slowly being swallowed by the planet, with desperate workers trying to pull them back out. They could use the help -- but be sure not to fall in yourself. Grotesque alien birds circle overhead, searching for the dead or the dying, workers caught in the collapsing earth. Save them before they're swallowed by the earth or swallowed by carrion birds -- and if you're too late, the locals would be happy to have their loved ones returned to them intact. ![]() Inside the factory, the machinery has collapsed in on itself from the earthquake; electricity sparks from damaged wires, dangerously nearby spilled oil drums or pools of standing water. Fire can start at any second. There are factory workers here that need rescuing, but also a variety of inanimate objects, including barrels of argecite, machinery parts, files, computers, etc. Anything that isn't bolted down needs to be moved outside of the factory before it explodes. Of course, no one is really keeping track of what's inside... THE MINES ![]() The Qorral have been digging in the mines since arriving on this planet 30 years ago, but recent efforts have shifted to fracking after the argecite veins slowly became depleted. The mines are still maintained by a skeleton crew of workers, making sure there is no build-up of dangerously flammable gas and patrolling the tunnels to look out for cave-ins -- which, after the earthquake, have happened in spades. The tunnels are winding and deep, turning in on each other and ending in dead ends or sudden, steep drop-offs into the dark. There are workers trapped within, and some at Perdition's Rest have said that their thrill-seeking relatives -- typically teenagers -- have gone missing. It's possible that they have found themselves trapped in the mine, so it may be a good idea to look out for them as well. And even deeper in the mine, there is a writhing, pale danger: sand worms, blind and hungry, wait in the dark. The earthquake has begun to drive them further up the tunnel, their tooth-lined maws open as they slither through toward the surface. Those focusing on the fields above may find a straggling sand worm or two, thrashing wildly in pain from the unfamiliar heat of the sun. This will definitely put a damper in the rescue and recovery efforts, so take them out as quickly as you can -- with as little damage to the fracking equipment, please. wait
what fucking friend ] What fucking friend.
[ oh
ohhhh
There's a Moment. It's the one where his breathing goes wheezy and he closes his eyes, tight. Reduced to something less than capable, more than reactive because there is something, she called it a friend, but it is moving shit around and he can't see it. He doesn't want to see it, he's seen enough. He's witnessed enough. ] If I - let me just --
[ If he hauls his weight's worth, he can drag the rubble sideways, and she might be able to pull the trapped worker out. ]

It's why she doesn't answer him, instead listening to how his breath becomes wheezy - knowing the reaction isn't a good one. But she doesn't say anything more about it, as long as he just keeps lifting the rubble, which becomes easier as the weight lessens.
But she glances back at Miles once more when he speaks, watching as he starts to drag the rubble sideways - her friend noticing and quickly helping, so that Lapis can let go. Quickly reaching for the worker, and wrapping her arms around his torso as she drags him out - the agonized cries causing her to wince, and the state his lower body is in causing her heart to sink, as it comes into view once he's free.]
Ugh, dammit - [She swings the miners arm over her shoulder, her own arm firmly wrapped around him - fully intending to carry him to help. There's nothing she can do for his wounds now, except pray that they don't kill him before he can get the help he needs.]
Help me carry him. [Gold eyes focus on Miles once more, her voice steady and her eyes sharp despite how her insides twist with panic.]

He doesn't let go. ] Got him? You g-- ok, shit. Damn. Give him here, you lead.
[ They need eyes up front, which means he'll have to muscle his way onto the other side of the worker, while he's making these god-awful noises that remind him of every other noise he's heard people in honest, mind-numbing pain make. Himself included. Arm around the waist, guy's arm over his shoulders. He's taller, broader than she is, and hauls the worker's weight up higher than she can handle. On purpose. ] If you and -- [ "Your friend", is what he can't bring himself to say. ]
If you can find a quicker path out, do it. I'm right behind you.
no subject
All right. [She turns on her heel to focus on the unseen phantom, not hesitating to follow their guidance. Having someone who is undeterred by collapsing debris and fires is useful, and already her companion has found a safe path out of here.]
This way, the hallway is mostly clear and we'll avoid the fires growing in the other rooms. [No explaining how she knows that, he can guess by now - and so she leads the way through part of the room that's been destroyed, heading into one of the many hallways of the factory. At least it's clear for now, but there's the sounds of shaking and explosions still in the distance.]

[ There's an impatience in his voice, brought on by the sounds the Qorral man is making, as they cart him through the hall in search of an exit. There has to be someone around who can render quality medical treatment. Personally, he knows that his CPR certification is about a year out of date, and god knows he does not have the ability to stop, drop and do compressions if the man goes into arrest.
He does not want to know, about her friend. There's something there, no doubt. Something unseen and able to interact with the world and as long as he studiously avoids acknowledging it, he also gets to avoid that gibbering little panic-voice in the back of his head screaming at him to get the fuck away from it all. ]
What were you doing here anyways? You look like hell.
[ POT................ KETTLE......... he knows he's lucky she came along. ]

And as before, she gives no other explanation about her friend - no assurances, no 'he's safe'. It's something that's best left until they get out and aren't about to have an entire building fall on top of them.
Though his words do get her to glance back over her shoulder, giving him a rather deadpan look once more.]
I could say the same about you. [Her eyes then flick back in front of her, still walking almost confidently ahead, even as they walk out into one of the large work areas once more.]
I was looking for people that were stuck, and needed help. I'm not a medic or anything, so I can do this much. [An explosion and the sound of metal creaking echoes nearby, but she keeps pressing on ahead.]
Why were you in here?

He knows exactly what he looks like - a bruised face, a limping gait - hell and back. There's acknowledging that, and then there's acknowledging that and spending his time confined to medical quarters until he's hale and hearty and healthy and FUCK that noise. When there's things to be done, and the faster it's done, the sooner he can go home. There's shit he needs to do there. There are scumbags that need to be destroyed-- ]
I don't have a clue what you're on - I'm naturally this pretty.
[ The Qorral won't stop moaning and whimpering, however careful he is, so it comes down to removing him from this place as fast and directly as possible now. Someone has to be posted out there, to take care of folks in need. Right? ]
I investigate things. That was my job back home, and what's needed of me now. I was getting as much off the computers as I could - then this guy started wailing. I thought he was DOA at first.
