[Asher's grip on the sheath of his weapon tightens, that is, before he recognizes the wiry frame of a boy he's seen on and off while scrolling his Magitek. Stiles can't know that he is haunted by the memory of a night that's far away now, long gone but not any less vivid in the way it still haunts him on particularly troublesome occasions. While derisive banter of the sort would usually bother him, in this moment it eases his worries.

A teammate, even if it's one he doesn't hold particularly fond feelings towards, is a wonderful sight to see.]

Whatever, bro.

[He glances to one side and then the other, as if to reaffirm that they are alone.

What he doesn't realize is that their surroundings are now suspiciously quiet.]

I'm new to this horror movie mess, you dig? Stop doggin' me, I'll figure it out.

[New he says, when in reality he's gotten used to fishing for information in the dead of night.]

Weren't you that nosy kid who gave me some serious 'tude on network, that one time?

[ I'm new to this horror movie mess, Asher says, and Stiles can barely stop a hysterical laugh from bubbling up, because his life has literally turned into a horror movie mess ever since he started high school, and if the memories of the future are anything to go off of, it's not going to change any time soon. he doesn't need a Barbossa to tell him to start believing in horror movies — he's been in one long before this mission even started.

which is why he, perhaps uncharacteristically, ignores the jab and being called a kid and waves his hand, sharp horizontal movements, a wordless cut it.

after a few seconds have passed (unless Asher fills them with chatter, god, how can there be someone who talks even more than he does), he whispers, ]

Okay, if you're new to this and I'm not, here's the plan: we do what we wanted to do here and then get the hell out. While being as silent as ghosts.

[He shoots a glare in Stiles' direction, with a sense of irritation that's misguided at best. Asher hates being belittled even though he's done just the same to the younger boy a few seconds ago. He wants so badly to be a real part of the team, to be someone useful or important, that it blinds him momentarily.

Nostrils flare, although he gives way in due time.]

It's not good to be in here alone, man.

[Although he doesn't follow the order entirely, his voice does get quieter.]

Maybe the fact that we found each other... It's for the best.

I didn't say it was!

[ comes his response, a sharp whisper which maybe takes away from the way he wanted to deliver the remark... though at least he does quiet down again, breathing out through his nose as he runs a hand through his hair.

for the best. yeah. ]

... yeah. It's what the mission debrief says, right? Don't go out alone. [ which... okay, so maybe deciding to do some more investigating on his own after the sewer fiasco wasn't one of his brightest ideas. ]

So — did you find anything yet, or are you heading to see what they've got in the archives? [ looks like their plan of "not talking" has to be scrapped until they've got a clear plan... but at least whispering is better than speaking out loud. ]

[Asher and Widowmaker were separated by circumstances that they couldn't control, otherwise he wouldn't be skirting it on his own either.]

No, I just got here. But I found some stuff in the sewers, I was there earlier.

[ which explains not only why his clothes smell not-that-great, but also why he looks somewhat banged up. turns out running from three infected isn't the greatest pastime there could be. ]

... I took pictures, I'll send them to you over, you know. [ he shrugs vaguely, meaning their Magitek — it's not really safe to talk about that here, even when it doesn't seem like there's anyone else around. ]

Sure, that's cool, I'll probably send them over to my bro Miles to see if we can-

[Asher's head whips around as soon as he catches wind of something.

It sounded like the rustling of tiny feet amidst broken glass and other debris, although that just may be his imagination.]

What was that?

[ there are questions he wants to ask, about this Miles person, what he can do — but just as Asher turns to look, Stiles lets out a breath, drags his hand across his face.

the answer to the question is an easy one. ]

Trouble, [ he says, with the tone of someone who's been through trouble one too many times. ] You got something to defend yourself with? [ because that's what it'll come down to — that's what it always comes down to. and he won't... he won't let this go like it almost did, in the sewers. it can't. ]
