[When he offers her the tissue, she raises her head to stare at him, clearly caught off-guard and confused. It's not a reflection on him, it's just that Maya's really not used to people treating her with real kindness.]
You---- you don't have to do anything for me.
[After a long moment's hesitation like she doesn't know what to do with the tissue, she takes it and blows her nose]
But, that's really kind of you. Thank you.

[A ripple in a pond.
For a second it feels as though he's staring at a bizarre version of his own reflection. Everything about her mannerisms, from the way she cringes slightly and looks up at him in confusion, is familiar. He's walked through all these motions before, and so he's aware of just how shit it is to be shell shocked for the first time.
Gentleness and patience had helped him then, so this is karma. He will give just as much as he got before, and then some.]
I can probably help getcha home.
You got a ride or... Anybody tough enough to pick you up? Let's call 'em.
[He has enough faith in himself to know that he can defend her for a short while.
Asher Millstone may be soft on the inside (and around the middle), but he is not slight of build, not at all.]

[She still doesn't know what to make of this, but quietly goes along with his gestures, cleaning herself up a little.]
[Does she have anyone she can call? The only person that flashes to mind is Jin, who'd also shown her a great deal of kindness she didn't know what to do with, and maybe Fiona. But she doesn't know either of them well. Can she count on them?]
[But more importantly---]
[She shakes her head, regaining a bit of her composure]
No, no-- I want to help. I want to stay, there--- there's got to be evidence in here, right?
[Even if she's scared, she can't do nothing.]
LMAO
[Maya hasn't been here for long, that much he understands.]
If you aren't in one piece when you find it? There's no way it's gonna be worth it.
[She needs time to clear her head and adjust, even if the notion of fighting to defend herself may never seem normal. He can't say for sure what's going through her mind right now, although he has a few hunches. There's a chance that she doesn't believe herself to be a person worth protecting.]
You're important too, girl.
Don't forget that.
[Asher jostles his wrist just a tad, shaking the fabric of his sleeve down so that his watch is visible.
Who can he call? Miles isn't a good option, not after what happened just a few weeks ago. Someone with a car... Does Jin know how to drive? Frick.
Their car keys are at home, and Hiruma's been transferred.]

[He misses the mark on that -- she's not quite at that stage -- but she is caught up with survivor's guilt over her sister's death and guilt over not being able to channel her when Nick needed her to. For Maya, who measures her self-worth solely on whether she can channel her dead sister or not, proving herself is the driving force in her head right now. It's not that she doesn't prioritize her own safety and well-being, it's just that in the face of the greater good, all these people suffering are more important.]
[But she isn't expecting to hear that from anyone, but especially Asher. The people here are a lot kinder than she's used to, and she doesn't seem to understand why this kindness is being pointed in her direction. She stares dumbly at him for a few seconds, like he spoke another language she's trying to decipher, and at last:]
I, I know that. But so are all these people... [Does she? The jury's out]

Jin has his hands full, but it seems like Nami's roaming around the city. He can trust her to be able to handle Maya, and knowing the two of them they've already crossed paths.]
You are, kiddo.
[His voice is faint, soft.
A far cry from anything she's probably seen on the network.]
I was really losin' my marbles, I-
[He inhales shakily.]
I needed to talk to somebody, and I did.
If you weren't around, who knows?
[Asher smiles as if he's joking, when he's really telling the truth.]
I might've been where you were, just now.
You ended up doin' me a really big favor, so. I owe ya.
no subject
I--- What?
[She helped him? By crying? She can't wrap her mind around it, how she could manage that. Sure, they're talking, but she's a blubbering mess, that's the farthest from helpful she can be. But still, if it were true, that would make her feel better, that she managed to do something useful for someone, even something like this, but, more likely than not--]
You... don't have to be nice to me, you know.
[He's saying that just to make her feel better, or so she thinks]

Has he said anything that seemed insincere? He may be a law student, but it's clear as day- Lying definitely isn't his forte.]
No, I mean it.
[His head shakes from side to side, vigorously.]
You've done a lot.
I swear.
[This is uttered not just in reference to what she's done for his own peace of mind. Maya may have needed a moment to console herself, to let her feelings out, but she has been brave (and foolish) enough to try and make something useful of herself even when it was most dangerous.
Somewhere, in the back of his head, he hears Jason scowl.
It's true, children are naive. They will do anything to prove themselves.
Asher too, in this way, is still a child.]
Let's get you outta here. C'mon.
no subject
..... Thank you, mis-- Asher.
[That too is kind of ridiculous, that she's thanking him for saying she helped him. She slowly gets to her feet, wiping away any remaining wet streaks on her face. Her face is still red and puffy, but it's progress]
B-But... I mean it. I can't leave now. I just got here.
[He's right; she will do anything to prove herself.]

We can hit up some of the offices on our way out.
[There's no guarantee that they'll find anything, but it's a start. Maybe it'll alleviate some of her anxiety, or tire her out.]
You and me.
[Leaving her alone is out of the question.]
But the minute we catch a whiff of anything stanky, we hightail it.
Sound like a plan?

[She considers the offer -- as much as she wants to help, she's scared, and she won't say no to having company, though she doubts Asher's going to be much help if things get nasty. She's not so hot on leaving empty-handed, but it is dangerous, so:]
...Okay. It's a plan.
[Good luck tiring her out, Asher.] Where should we start?
