WARNINGS: injuries, panic attacks, more or less zombies, idk man i'll update
SUMMARY: peter's infection finally reaches the more serious symptoms, and like any well-adjusted individual, he runs away after lashing out unintentionally. stiles deals with the injuries and tries to mobilize a search for him (mostly by doing the searching all by himself, good job??)

i. i'm frozen to the bones — university
[ it isn't a common sight, to see Stiles out and about so early in the morning it can barely be called morning — sure, he makes a point to be at the station early enough, but never without complaining about the time and increasingly desperate attempts to drown himself in coffee. now, though, he looks wide awake, despite the heavy circles around his eyes.ii. i'm a million miles from home — random city location of your choosing
no, the sight isn't a common one, but it certainly is alarming, especially when one pays careful attention to the way each step he takes is somehow less steady than the one before it, the way he cradles his arm at an awkward angle and winces when moving forward jostles it slightly. still, he isn't stopping — he makes his way across the university grounds, then to where the cars are parked...
... yep, you guessed it, he's totally going to drive his car like this, with one arm out of commission and looking like he might actually clock out any minute now.

[ he's no longer sure how long he's been walking around. hours, days — he's trying not to count how long it's been since his ill-adviced decision to try and tranquilize a sleeping super-powered individual, seriously, just how did he think that was a good plan?
(he didn't, that's what. he didn't think, because he had no plan. none... just like he doesn't have a plan now. for someone whose strength tends to be coming up with plans, he sure seems to be lacking in that department lately.)
the magitek is of no help, because what good is a locating system built in when you can just leave your magical jewelry in a lab, right? right. quietly, he mutters, ] You just had to remember that too, didn't you? Great.
[ as if talking to himself in the place of the one he actually wants to talk to, making dry comments about the situation, made it all somehow easier to deal with. (spoilers: it doesn't.)
after another block, Stiles finally has to sit down, finding the nearest bench that's empty. it's cold, but he doesn't care, curling in on himself as he leans his head in his hands. this... isn't working. he has no plan, no idea where to look for Peter, no clues to follow. nothing. it's like he's disappeared into thin air and all he can do is walk around the city until his legs give out under him, until the curfew once again forces him back inside — back to the dorms, to his room, in the faint hope that maybe, maybe this time it won't be empty.
breathe, he reminds himself. it'll be fine. it's fine. it's — ]
Fine. It's fine. I'm fine, [ he whispers out loud, his voice brittle, barely there.
(spoilers: he's not.) ]

[Anyway, this kind of thing she has no qualms talking about (distracting Stiles and humiliating Phoenix with one story? Her specialty!!) so she's perfectly happy to regale him with tales of japanifornia. He's starting to relax and breathe, so that's something. All she has to do is keep distracting him, right?]
Phoenix Wright. Isn't that a weird name? It sounds like something straight out of a video game!

Honestly, he's a pretty weird guy in general. He cross-examined a parrot once, yanno.
[Though Maya did most of the talking there.... and also got the parrot to fess up a safe combination in the first place... she's really in no position to talk]

initially, he only shrugs — a weird name, yeah, but honestly so is Sonia Nevermind, or Giorno Giovanna when you think of it, or even his own, actual name... he can't really judge.

["Phoenix Wright" doesn't even sound a real name, unlike Stiles and Giovanni and--- okay, Sonia's is pretty bad. But Stiles needs distraction, and Maya's happy to provide that while simultaneously making fun of Phoenix]
[(In all honesty, she misses him. But even if she could go back and see him-- she can't, now. She has to become a full-fledged medium before that)]
No, seriously, you gotta hear this! So, there was this old guy who was faking amnesia, right? And he trained his parrot to remember key phrases! Like.. "what's the safe combination".... and that kinda thing.
[and naturally Maya exploited this parrot to break into the safe, but that's part two of that story]

at least the good thing out of all this is that it's distracting enough, making the air flow into his lungs as he puzzles it over, making the ocean tide turn back, even just a little. he's no longer drowning. ]
Maya — well, don't stop there. What happened to that guy?

Anyway, this guy burned off his own fingerprints, so we couldn't prove it was him! And then Nick went, "I want to cross-examine the parrot!" so we had to ask cute little Polly questions to prove who her owner was. It was really tough, 'cause the prosecutor we were up against was a real creep, but Nick managed to turn things around and prove he was the real killer, all because of that cute little parrot!
I guess it was kinda cool, now that I mention it...

it works, though — he's too incredulous to remember to panic. ]
Wait, seriously? He won by cross-examining a parrot? ... wow.
[ with the barest of smiles, after a pause, after he takes a moment to just breathe, he glances at her. ] ... thanks, Maya. [ for, you know. breaking him out of his panic attack. for being a good friend. ]

He proved the caretaker's identity with the parrot! After that, it was child's play. [For part one of the case, anyway]
[She gives him a smile when he thanks her, and pats his back]

[ he nods in response, and really... any other time, a comment like that would be enough to make him breathe out a laugh. now, though, he just smiles wryly and says, ] I think it was the opposite, actually.

[ he can't help but smile at her at the amount of cheer she's showing — it's impossible not to be charmed, at least a little... but the question and the mention of the infected is enough to turn his thoughts back to the actual cause of his panic attack, and his expression closes again. ]
... yeah. That's what — that's why... [ deep breaths, Stiles, deep breaths. ] Peter's infected. He... he left yesterday and I can't find him anywhere. He's just gone. [ and god, he needs to find him and fast, before things get worse. ]

Wait, like, infected infected? Peter? [but he was working on a cure!! He's a brilliant nerdy scientist type!! How could he get infected?!]

What do you think I've been trying to do? I'm trying, Maya, I swear. [ trying the best he can. just... turns out that finding someone who doesn't want to be found and also can crawl up buildings is not exactly the easiest to find. ]
