Padme taught her to be a ninja teen (she's a radical rat!!)
[She steels herself and then--- immediately struggles to lift a manhole cover. Good job, Maya.]

Perhaps it shouldn't have been. Most everyone she has seen, or spoken to, was deeply affected by the mission, of the atrocities Percy had committed. It would stand to reason that some of them, would share a trait of recklessness with her husband. Eager to act and make things right, without considering all other avenues.
Or to account for potential harm. The girl at least attempted to wear some form of padding, but doesn't appear to have a weapon of any kind. She doubts it will be enough to protect against the fellow infected, not with what she's seen, in her own trip to the sewers.
Without hesitation, she decides on a course of action. Looks to ensure none of the vehicles that had appeared so strange to her are coming, and then darts across the road to where Maya is attempting to lift the manhole cover, without success. She's far more unlikely to admit it, but that streak of recklessness exists within her too.
Not enough to not attempt to put a stop to this though, and she tries to keep her tone neutral when she speaks]
Are you certain you wish to do that?

[That is, if she ever manages to get the manhole off the ground. Stay posted.]
[Just as she manages to lift it slightly, Padme addresses her and cuts through her thoughts. Maya, easily startled as she is, jumps about half a foot in the air and drops the cover noisily]
-EEEEK!
[Hopefully no one else nearby caught this entirely inconspicuous display, because Maya's now staring at Padme wide-eyed]
W-What the heck?! Where did you come from?!
[evidently she didn't expect anyone else to approach her... in broad daylight... okay Maya]

She almost has to stifle a laugh behind her hand, discovering with a cough, and arches a brow. If anything, this has only convinced her all the more, that Maya venturing there, and venturing there alone, is a horrible idea.
She looks so utterly unprepared]
The other side of the street.
[She points across and about half a block down] I apologize. I didn't mean to startle you.
no subject
[But yeah, she's completely right, Maya is completely unprepared and only barely knows what she's doing. But not like she's going to let that stop her...]
You're really fast... like a ninja.
[She recovers easily, bouncing back to cheerful and cheeky] You didn't. I was just.... letting you think that, in case you were an infected coming to chomp on me!
[A+, very believable] You should be careful, you know, there are lots of infected people around.

[Sorry Maya, she's not from your typical Earth upbringing, and while she's adapted to a lot of her environment that she would have considered far outdated, or even strange by the standards of any planet she's been to- terminology is still an area in which she's severely lacking.
A smile flickers across her face for a moment, and she dips her head in acknowledgement] Of course.
[She doesn't bother pointing out that the zombies likely wouldn't have cared whether or not she was startled- they appeared in the later stages of infection, completely out of control, motivated solely by their hunger. Maya likely already knows, and simply wants to save face.
Or prove that she can still do this]
I know. They've also appeared underground. Which brings me to my original question. Are you certain you wish to do that?
no subject
.... Nothing? [Gosh, what kind of sad world must Padme come from, if she doesn't know what a ninja is...]
[But Maya appreciates the discretion. Despite her bluster, she knows she's not suited for fighting infected or anything else, but desperate times and desperate measures and all that]
Of course! This was just a warm up! I'm gonna be way more on the ball once I start sloshing around the sewers! No zombies are gonna have a shot.
[Try not to laugh out loud, Padme] If anything, you should be careful. If you snuck up on an infected like that, they might try to get a piece of you! Literally.

[Confusion had sunk in further with every word, with the movements- while she can see are an attempt to be some sort of fighting style, a bit non-threatening in the suit she wears, she can't reconcile it with anything she's actually seen. Anakin might have done better, being well trained in several different forms of combat, but for her- she'd learned to defend herself with a blaster and a cunning mind for weaponry.
It's something she's going to file away, and look into further later. Or perhaps ask Maya at another, more appropriate time]
Did you bring a weapon? [Other than yourself? She can't help the slight doubt from entering her tone. That she doesn't think Maya herself is enough. Perhaps against one- about against a group that would be drawn to the sound and the rest of her all at once?]
Don't worry. I don't have any intention of sneaking up on anyone else, infected or not.

[She pulls out the flashlight... it's heavy, but it's not really a weapon.] .... Plus, I've got some other tricks up my sleeve.
[In reality she's hoping she can stave off the infected with physical contact... Padme's right to have her doubts. But if Maya notices, she doesn't give any inclination]
[(She does have contingency plans -- the jewelry she's gotten from Jin and ALASTAIR could save her in a pinch-- but hopefully it won't come to that]
Oh, good. If you get in a pinch, you can hug... but you gotta be careful! Trust me, I'm an expert on this kinda thing.
[aaand she's back to trying to get the manhole cover off... rest in pieces, Maya]

[As much for the light source as a heavy object to strike them with. It still leaves a lot of potential for things to go very, very badly- but it's certainly better than not having anything at all.
When Maya expresses that she has tricks, the tension in Padmé's shoulders eases, and her smile relaxes as a result. She assumes, likely, that she either has a useful tool, like the necklace that Anakin imparted upon her- or some special natural ability. In that case, a visible weapon wouldn't be necessary.
Still, having gifts capable of protecting oneself and being prepared remain two different things, and she's loathe to leave her to her own devices]
Hug them? I don't think- [And there she goes, lifting the manhole covers] You're not expecting anyone to meet you?
I don't think it's safe for you to go in on your own.

[After a minute or so of struggling, Maya manages to flip it over with a lot of huffing and exertion, and looks back over at Padme]
Nah, but it never hurts to be prepared. And I've got my huggy arms right here!
[She thrusts out her arms as if to demonstrate that.] Plus, most people are pretty busy right now, so I kinda have to go on my own.
[that's kind of the issue, here]
Lilith is cool but crude (gimme a break!)
[She hears a noise and immediately shrieks, shining her flashlight directly into the eyes of---]
[Lilith?!]
Oh, sorry, I thought you were---
[She lowers it but fumbles and then drops it. Well done, Maya]
--Sorry!
