i invited ortega over tonight to watch sliders in my room (closed)

CHARACTERS: Mettaton, Maya, Peridot, Feferi, Keats, Olivia, Vaughn, Oliver, Giorno, Fugo, Papyrus (and possibly Sans)
DATE: A bit after arriving in Terra Felis
WARNINGS: Some of the movies involve violence, but this is just a sleepover. On a cat planet.
SUMMARY: Mettaton invited his closest friends to a musical viewing planned for when they got back to Oska. They're uh... they're just gonna have to make due with what they have.

...this isn't what Mettaton expected.

The original plan was much more dour in nature, surely. He had a very specific intent to hole himself in his room in Oska, feel horrible for himself, and then force those whose presence he enjoyed into spending the night with him watching movies that he also enjoyed. It was meticulously planned to cheer himself up! To encourage his friends to meet with one another and talk about how wonderful him and his taste in entertainment was! To fill the gaping void of despair of leaving Woodhurst with love and admiration!!

Instead, he found himself surrounded by cats. That tends to blast a hole in any pre-planned pity-party.

But! The show must go on, even with a change in scenery or motivation. Besides, it isn't as if his wonderful, wonderful friends (and Keats) couldn't use something fun themselves!! He promised them a celebration! After everything they've gone through, they certainly deserve it.

So his hotel room has been decorated as beautifully as Mettaton himself. Blankets hang from the ceiling, creating one giant fort within the room proper. Glitter is seemingly everywhere. Snacks (...mostly meat-based, like hamburgers, thanks to the area) have been paid for and set up lovingly along more blankets on the floor. Several pillows are also on the floor, as well a steady pile of them in the corner of the room (for extra and/or lounging, you see). The bed holds even more pillows, and the vanity has been encompassed in the fort for any emergency midnight makeovers.

It's going to be a long night.

--

6pm to 11pm:
West Side Story
Little Shop of Horrors
Les Mis

Things are starting off particularly well! It's a trio of downers, sure, but there's enjoyment to be had with them regardless! Mettaton continues to maintain that these are classics and need to be revered as such, but this notably doesn't stop him from pointing out any terrible singing or riffing on anything silly, especially with the last movie involved. He encourages his friends to do the same and get as much fun out of the experience as possible. It's a fine start.

--

12am to 4am:
The Little Mermaid
Enchanted
Into the Woods

The snacks are beginning to wane. The weakest of those invited have begun to quietly drift off into the night, which is a shame for two reasons: One, these are more hopeful movies!! The joyful ones!! The ones Mettaton can't seem to stop himself from sobbing dramatically at. Two, he has a supply of glitter pens at his disposal and has suspiciously left them in plain view, as if challenging his guests to use them on one another.

--

5am to 7am:
Sweeney Todd
Chicago
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Grease 2

It's the dreaming hours, now. Most people with sane sleeping schedules or an ability to tune out Mettaton's gabbing have taken to the slumber part of this party. The movies have also gotten a bit more... questionable, in their content. Cannibalism, murder, badly-sung songs about reproduction... Anyone still awake has most likely reached that blissful, slap-happy state of all slumber-parties where everything is hilarious, the giggles cannot stop, and you're constantly trying to keep yourself from waking the rest of the guests.

--

Mingle, enjoy, and please keep Maya from eating all of the snacks.

PS: Don't trust the bone goblin attempting to sell catnip. He wasn't invited.

[Fugo... lazily waves a hand! Go ahead and steal those snacks, Feferi, he was bullied into taking them to begin with. Her theft is immediately forgiven.]

It's fine. There's plenty. [And he's not that hungry anyway. Fugo squints at her and then...] Oh! Feferi, right? From the mall. Were you wearing a cloak?

[The horns are a little distracting, but Fugo's got a good eye for faces and an even better ear for voices.]

Yes, that was me! Human me didn't really look that much like real me, but I guess it was close enough.

[ And since he said it's okay, she's just going to help herself to a little more of his snack. He said it was okay! ]

It would be nice if I could have some of human me's Earth knowledge though. I don't think I understand these movies. They are fun, but confusing!

Hearing your voice helped. I've got a good ear for that sort of thing.

[It is more than okay. In fact. After taking a stealthy look across the room to make sure he's not spotted, Fugo nudges the plate closer to Feferi. He does, in the interest of good faith, pick up one of the snacks to nibble at.]

Mm, yeah. Literature of any sort is very reflective of the culture and time period it was written in. [A pause. Is. This girl. From some kind of weird Earth? Or is she an alien. All he can tell at this point is that she is very obviously not human. In the end, he chooses not to say, "And, as an alien..."] I imagine most of these would be very confusing from an outside perspective.

What in particular is confusing to you about them? This sort of analysis isn't my forte, but I should be able to help with basic concepts.

Hmm, well... there's a lot of things.

[ Where to even start? Maybe with the topic she at least has a glancing understanding of, because it's probably more perplexing than anything. The contrast with what she already knows is harder to contend with than these completely new and foreign topics. ]

I thought humans liked their offspring? Why are people so weird about that one girl having a... child?

[ She sounds like she's not totally sure of the word itself. She's talking about Fantine... ]

Mm... that's a complicated question. [Fugo brings one hand up to his face, idly tapping the his mouth when he thinks.] The problem is that, culturally, many humans are monogamous-- the ideal is to have one partner who you devote your entire life to.

Historically, women were under incredible pressure to find and devote themselves to a male partner; a "husband". It was considered a terrible disgrace for them to be sexually active before marriage. This shitty attitude has softened and changed somewhat in the modern era but, from my point in time, women who are sexually active outside of marriage are often looked down on while men of similar habits are praised.

Fantine went against what was considered, at the time, one of the most basic standards of society by having the child of a lover she wasn't married to. She lost her "worth" as a woman-- and with that stigma attached to her name, no man will marry her and no "respectable" place of work will hire her. It's a fucked up situation that was sadly very common when Les Misérables was written.

[ This isn't very funny, but Feferi can't help but laugh. She puts a hand to her mouth at least, because she understands that she's supposed to be taking it seriously, but sometimes humans are so... weird. She feels a little bad though, because the movie itself seems pretty somber, so she lets off one last giggle, then smiles apologetically. ]

I'm sorry, I know it is not supposed to be funny at all. It's just so weird to me! How does marriage even work? What happens if your "husband" dies?

[Fugo shakes his head and waves one hand. It's cool, Feferi.]

It's fine. It sounds strange when it's all laid out like that. A marriage is... you consider it a contract, of sorts. A promise of faithfulness between two parties and the merger of their households. It can be dissolved in a divorce, but in the part of the world I'm from it's very frowned upon.

A woman whose husband has died is called a "widow" and a man whose wife has died is a "widower". And it... depends. There's an expected period of mourning no matter how old you are, but older people often don't remarry if their partner dies.

But then... because she didn't get married... she couldn't get married once she had a baby human? If she had gotten married first, then could she get married again?

[ The gears are turning, she's really trying to understand, but she's thinking she might never fully comprehend it. And humans thought troll romance was complicated. At least trolls didn't have any of this weird contract stuff, or anything like offspring to get in the way of things. ]
unholey: (BREATH ☠ since they cancelled)

[personal profile] unholey 2017-05-01 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Fugo shrugs. What can you do, Feferi. Marriage is dumb. Social constructs are foolish. People who are shitty to each other and to children are the fucking worst.]

Yes, that's right. Divorce didn't happen at all in that time period, especially among the working class. Honestly, even if she she was a proper widow, it would probably have been frowned upon for her to remarry at all.

Think of it this way-- Fantine's relationship with Tholomyès is forbidden, because they weren't married. Cosette is physical proof of their relationship. Even though he's the one at fault for leading her on and discarding her, Fantine is the one who has to bear all the responsibility for it.

...no offense, but humans are really confusing. I am still not sure if I really get it.

[ And she likely never will. Or, not for a long time anyway. Maybe she'll come back to this in a few decades with a new perspective. Maybe. ]

Thank you for trying, though. I think I just feel bad for Fantine. She seems like a nice person.

It's okay. Most of this stuff about marriage and whatever-- [Fugo flicks a wrist towards the television.] It's a "one size fits all" solution. Nevermind that it doesn't fit everybody, or people outgrow it, or end up unhappy with what they picked. It's stupid.

That's good-- Victor Hugo, the author of Les Misérables, wrote her to be that way. Fantine is a criticism of the society that condemned countless women into similar circumstances.
fintastic: (thankful)

tie this one off here maybe?

[personal profile] fintastic 2017-05-09 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
...did I mention that humans are really, really confusing?

[ There were so many things about Alternian society that difference beyond just the marriage aspect that Feferi still isn't sure she can comprehend it, so instead she stops asking questions, flashes a smile, and sits back to keep watching the movie.

At least the music is nice. ]
