EVENT ★ LABYRINTH III: THE ESCAPE

LABYRINTH III The correct passageway to the inner ring of the maze is hidden behind a thick wall of vines. After cutting through the plants, the structure of the maze is noticeably different: the overgrown plants continue creeping up the walls, but the walls are no longer brick and stone, composed instead of some sort of blue metal with holes and divots carved elaborately into the surface. From some holes gush forth pure, clean water; from others, acidic liquid. The air is cool and crisp, the plants creating a lush, dim environment lit by eerie blue lights spread throughout this section. The lizards, rats, and other monstrous creatures seem to be absent from this area of the maze, replaced instead by rhinoceros-sized beetles. The beetles each have a single horn protruding from the head, and their hard carapaces make them difficult to kill -- a better method might be to simply climb somewhere high and wait for the beetle to get bored. But unlike the other monsters encountered in the maze, the beetles seem to have something else on their mind beyond wanton violence: they can sometimes be found rolling massive balls of dung throughout the corridors of the labyrinth. (This might explain why the plants are so lush closer to the center.) There is little time to explore this section of the labyrinth before there's a flicker of light all around and more ALASTAIR recruits suddenly appear, most dressed in a freshly pressed uniform and carrying extra food and supplies. They have been told that the cloaking surrounding Asterion Labyrinth is so strong and complex that Oska was only able to send in a handful of recruits at once for a relief effort. In order to leave, they'll have to locate the escape mechanism that lies deep within the labyrinth; the remaining Asterion Prison correctional officers know its general location, but not precisely what it entails. All they know is that it will require technological cunning to operate and that it's heavily guarded. After five days, the portal room is found. THE PORTAL ROOM The center of the labyrinth is a large, circular room with a raised platform in the middle. On this platform rests a circle of computer consoles surrounding another platform, on which sits an empty circular frame 2.5m (8') in diameter. This is the dormant portal, and it is now Audentes's task to turn it on and find their way back to Oska. Because the portal is not made for interdimensional travel, it must be overclocked, which will cause it to burn out and explode once it is used. In order to override the safety protocols in place to prevent such dangerous tampering, the control panels must be unlocked -- and unfortunately, the locks are all complicated puzzles, ranging from the numerical to sliding pieces into place to complete a pattern. There are many of these puzzled scattered around the portal room, and once they are all unlocked, it's a simple matter of flipping the power override switches. Ignore the dangerous humming sound and the way the frame suddenly fills with violent purple energy. That's probably normal. The new recruits have the correct coordinates to locate Oska, which has temporarily lowered its cloaking shield to allow Audentes to return. So there is a bit of a time crunch. Adding more to the difficulty of the situation is the presence of a monster lumbering around the circular portal room. Six meters (20') high, the beast is best described as a minotaur, but perhaps not in the traditional sense: while it resembles a bipedal bull, it is an amalgamation of flesh and machine with its body covered in pistons and glowing lights. One of its hands is an enormous axe and it belches fire and acid. Despite its head resembling an herbivore, the piles of desiccated bones scattered throughout the portal room tell a different story. Upon seeing the group, the minotaur charges. Mavahari, the Zymandis recruit, rushes to meet it with her sword drawn. Inmates and correctional officers do their best to fight it as well, but something becomes quickly apparent: it cannot be harmed by projectile weapons. The machinery of the beast keeps it protected from most attacks, though electricity will stun it and acid will corrode its metal. But in order to injure the minotaur, it must be stabbed between the metal plates where its vulnerable flesh remains. During the battle, the minotaur fights viciously and without regard for its own safety. The first casualty comes early: the minotaur swings its axe toward Mavahari, who is pushed out of the way by George. The axe connects with him solidly, sending him flying into the wall with a shuddering impact. George lies there still, but there's no time to mourn. The beast continues its rampage. Once the minotaur is defeated, you'll have to quickly decide what to do with the correctional officers and inmates who have followed Audentes through the Asterion Labyrinth. The overclocked portal won't hold forever, and the longer Oska leaves its cloak down, the better chance they have of being found by their enemies. OOC NOTES This log will last for six IC days: five days for exploration and one day at the center of the maze. We have also recently altered the calendar this month, so make sure you review it! IMPORTANT: Participation in the solution poll is mandatory for August AC. Failure to participate will result in an automatic strike. The only exception is for those who are exempt from August AC. [It is vague. While the dead have returned in Beacon Hills before (or once, thanks Peter Hale), he doesn't draw the necessary conclusions that might be available here. It doesn't occur to him that she means it in a literal sense.

He looks up at her, recalling their brief chat in the dressing room, and he nods.]

Well, I kinda am right now.

[feytality]

[She readjusts into a sitting position, touching her magatama and beads -- one of the few things she has left from her original acolyte uniform.]

Well-- I mean... to him. His spirit. If you want to see him again.

[That doesn't make it much clearer. After a beat, she adds]

--- I can channel him, I mean. I can try.

[banded]

[Scott's eyes pass to her magatama and beads, wondering if he should recognize them. The style reminds him of something that Kira's mother might have in her house, but he ultimately doesn't know much about cultures other than his own. He's working on it, but recognition doesn't come until she reaches her final words.]

Is that, um—is that respectful to him? [he asks, and his eyes leave her to look across the way were Mavahari is. If anyone should be able to say good-bye, it's her.]

[She's already channeled him once for Mavahari -- but she has no recollection of what went on there. Still, Scott's one of the few to really feel George's loss, to mourn him. This much she can do, right? It's what she's been training for]

What do you mean....?

[She hasn't considered that, apparently]

It's not that I think he'd be bothered. [Even with Mettaton's really obvious display of disrespect, Scott hadn't seen too much fuss from George. He was more passive. Someone saying good-bye wouldn't bother him, normally. However—there is the fact where it might not be something he wants. Maybe he does want to ... pass on. To wherever people go.

Being a werewolf means being confronted with the realities of death all the time. Once someone is gone, they're gone. But then, sometimes, they aren't. He recalls how he felt like Allison helped him long after her death.]

I just ... if he wants to go on, would it be bad to call him back? Or whatever it is you do.

[feytality]

Well -- it's just be temporary. His spirit is still around, yanno, I'd just be there to let you speak to him.

[George seemed really happy when Maya showed him kindness, when Mavahari did. Scott must have, too, since he stuck up for him on the network and was crying over him now. Maybe it'd give the both of them a little peace of mind to be able to say goodbye.]

[Her shoulders sag, though] If you don't want to, that's okay. I just--- I figured it's the least I can do. For the both of you.

No—no, I'd like to. [Scott can't help but feel like this is an odd opportunity. After Allison, after so many losses, he hasn't had the opportunity to really say good-bye to anyone in the way he'd like. He's used to maybe hearing a final few words, and then feeling the impact of it.

Sometimes, he still dreams of Allison, of maybe, that time, being able to help her through her pain—in being able to keep her alive along enough to help her—]

I'd like to do this. Thank you for offering.

[feytality]

[Despite the fact that she's offered, Maya's not so sure her powers are working well enough to test this. But George is kind of a pushover -- she's not afraid of him hurting someone with her body or getting hurt by Scott, but now that she's offered she really hopes her spiritual powers hold up well enough to get this done.]

[Well, only one way to find out]

Okay... I'll do my best.

[She presses her hands together in a praying pose] Are you ready?

[banded]

Yeah. [Scott straightens up, observing her. He's never seen anything like this done. Some part of him is still wrapping his head around it.]

Do you need me to do anything to help?

[feytality]

No-- you don't need to do anything.

[She closes her eyes, concentrating hard -- for a minute, nothing happens, then all of a sudden, she's a different person.]

[George, to be specific! Aside from her hair, her entire body has changed physically to resemble him -- aaaaawkward -- and Scott has the opportunity to talk to him, for a couple of minutes]

[That is ... definitely weird. Awkward, too. Scott takes a moment to adjust to what's happening, but maybe not as long as some people might. He thanks George for his kind words, and thanks him for his service. And for saving Mavahari. He just wishes he could have saved both George and Mavahari.

Once the moment passes, Scott looks down, solemn and silent.]

[Once it's over, Maya reverts to normal, slumping over a little from the effort. Looks like it took a lot out of her, but that's probably due to the lack of food and proper sleep more than the channeling itself]

Whew.... did it work?

[banded]

Yeah, it worked. [It's said a little absently. Scott's surprised she couldn't tell, but he doesn't really want that to be his focus.

This is his focus instead:] Are you gonna be okay? You look like you're out of it. [It may be the lack of proper sleep and food, but he can't help but think that her doing this for him drained her. If he had that ability, he knows that he'd give quite a few people a chance to say good-bye.]

[feytality]

[She pats her face with both fists to try to hype herself up again....]

Yeah... I'm just a little tired. Whew, as soon as we get to Oska, I'm making up for lost energy and shoving my face full of food!

[at least she still has her enthusiasm??]

Okay, I mean—if you're sure. [Scott doesn't look like he's convinced by that enthusiasm. Then again, it doesn't take much for him to worry about someone.]

I can go see if there's some food left over from the supplies they brought in. Call it a trade for what you helped me with here. [And then she can take it easy before they portal out.]

[feytality]

[Taking it easy is not in Maya's vocabulary, but she's not going to say no to free food]

Sure. I'd eat anything that's not rats, or lizards, or cursed fruit right now.

[banded]

I might not be an ALASTAIR expert, but I'm pretty sure they never sent any of that along. [That would be like one sick joke, which doesn't really apply to how they present themselves.]

I'll be back. You—uh—[He offers an awkward glance to George.]

If you'd like to relocate, it's fine. I'll be able to find you.

[feytality]

If they do, that's it for me! I'll quit!

[...Yeah, there is that. She'd love to linger to pay her respects, but there's so much doom and gloom she can take]

Now that you mention it.... it's probably best if I let other people have some alone time with him.

Yeah, I think so, too. I'll be back in a bit.

[Scott gives her an awkward salute before he walks off.]
