EVENT ▸ EMPIRE OF THE CRASHING WAVE
EMPIRE OF THE CRASHING WAVE ![]() The royalty of Guild Ophelia has managed to hold an audience with Empress Nama of the Celestial Mountains, urging her to meet with the Empress of the Crashing Wave in the interest of finding an accord between their clans. In return, Nama requests that Ophelia take two letters to the Crashing Wave's court, where, as foreigners, they should be received better than any of her own people. The Empire of the Crashing Wave is a week's travel by foot from the Land of Celestial Mountains, through the forests and farms of the Flowerlands. There is no visible indication that this universe was once two, with even the road leading through the Flowerlands heading seamlessly toward the sea. The farms and villages in the outskirts of the Empire of the Crashing Wave are decorated in seashells and motifs of the sea, and the closer one gets to the city, the stronger the scent of the ocean becomes. Once the city proper is reached, Ophelia's magitek projects words in front of their eyes that only they can see: Location reached:The city is built right on the ocean's edge, with some parts of it even jutting out into the sea on bridges and piers. The castle, Peaceful Tide, is built high above the rest; guards will stop anyone at the gates and, if shown the correspondence from Empress Nama, will deliver the letters directly to Empress Youmi. Attempts to seek an audience with Youmi will be rebuffed for the time being, so you may as well take in the sights... ▸ A PROMISING DEVELOPMENT ![]() Closer to the Beach, there is a boardwalk where young couples stroll alongside grandparents chasing after their grandchildren, electric lamps bathing the wooden planks in a warm glow at night. Fishermen haul in their daily catch in buckets and nets, trailed by a gaggle of hopeful cats. Beachcombers and pearl divers populate the beach as well, making it a clear place for work instead of play. A few days after Ophelia's arrival in sea clan territory, a bell rings loudly in the late afternoon, drawing citizens toward the castle. Guards stop anyone from getting too close, though the populace seems to know what to expect -- soon, a beautiful woman in an elaborate blue kimono appears in an upper balcony. When viewing the woman, Ophelia's magitek will tell them: » EMPRESS YOUMIThe crowd cheers at Youmi's arrival, only quieting once she raises her hand. She speaks clearly and confidently, her voice carrying easily across the assembly. "I have received a letter from Her Imperial Majesty Nama of the Land of Celestial Mountains. She informs me that their spring festival was interrupted by an attack from our own people, working without my knowledge or consent," Youmi begins, holding her hand up again when a displeased rumble begins to ripple through the crowd. It's unclear if they're perturbed by the ambush or by Nama herself. Once all is silent again, she continues. "She has detained the criminals, for that is what they are, and assures me she will not bring this to the battlefield. I will send her an agreement to the terms, but hear this: any who escalate this further will be slain by my order. I have spoken. The spirits of the sea watch over us all." Youmi then retreats back into the castle. While some citizens cheer their empress's decree, others mutter unhappily amongst themselves as they disperse and go about their business. ▸ BUT TROUBLE CONTINUES ![]() As the sun sinks down, finding a place to sleep might be a good idea. There are hotels in the city, but for those who are trying to be a little more frugal, the Flowerlands is a good place to set up camp for free. Doro, the Lord of the Flowerlands, has heard of Ophelia's efforts in starting communication between the empresses as well, and offers rooms in his castle in thanks; if war were to start between the two, his land would suffer for it. During the night, those who accept Doro's invitation will hear a commotion very nearby, steel clashing against steel. Doro and his daughters rush out, weapons drawn, and straight into a skirmish between sea and mountain clan ronin. The warriors are fighting to kill, and in their fervor, someone's fire arrow alights a farmhouse on Doro's property. The farmers need to be rescued and the fire put out, and while the warriors will likely kill each other, they could also be subdued to prevent further damage. Please let the mods know with a link to the thread if your character is killing or capturing any of the ronin. After the skirmish, Doro must be brought back inside his castle, having been wounded during the battle. He pleads with Ophelia to continue to help, as it looks like a tentative truce by the empresses is not enough to calm the citizens. Since they were so successful in receiving an audience with Nama, he believes they can propose a way the two empires can live in harmony. Throughout the next two weeks, skirmishes between the clans are peppered throughout the Flowerlands, some leaving bodies behind and some leaving damage to farms and forest. It looks like Ophelia's peacekeeping mission just became a lot more hands-on: keep the skirmishes from getting out of control while still working toward a way to end the conflict once and for all. ▸ OOC NOTES This log will last for two IC weeks: the first three days will be free exploration, and day four is Youmi's proclamation and the skirmish in the Flowerlands. For an instant, Dany remembers running down docks and past barrels and barrels of clams, a samite gown flying in her wake, the brine of a salt-sea upon her lips. She remembers how hard Viserys' hand had clenched her own as they'd hurried to some place, and the taste of another sort of salt on her cheeks.
Her heart halts beneath her breast, and for an instant, something flickers over her face. ]
I am, [ she answers, her Low Valyrian soft in its Tyroshi accent. She was precocious enough to absorb the Braavosi dialect as a young girl, but she had spent more time on the streets of Tyrosh. Do I start at little girls now? Dany wonders. ] You are the first to name me that in Braavosi.
[ To her face. ]
and the direwolf isn't even here yet
[ zokla gives a little dismissive toss of her head. her hair now reaches closer to her shoulders in a tangled bird’s nest. it wants cutting.
the doll in her hands has similar wild hair. the face and hands were delicately carved. care was taken in its making, though the little girl didn’t take the same care in her play. the skirt has a water stain and the body has a scratch through which the stuffing struggles to break out.
she drops the doll on the boardwalk. it’s only a stupid toy. ]

And now the last dragonlord stands before her. But Zokla does not descend from the Braavosi, does she? ]
As well it should be, if they are fool enough to try, [ comes the sweet answer. The queen gives a shrug; she will not defend slavers. She despises the Meereenese, though in truth, it is the nobles who draw her ire, the nobles she names Meereenese. Freedmen are spared her wrath; there are many now in her city walls that only live there for want of a home. ] You shall meet no Meereenese under that quest.
[ Not only because she shall never give up that tenet of her conquest, but because there is nothing to trade. She does not say so, though, instead gathering the doll into her hands. It is a raggedy thing, and threatening to fall apart, though well-loved. Dany cannot remember owning such a toy, though she supposes she must have, once.
In the distance, a splash sounds, and a winged silhouette vanishes beneath the water. In a matter of seconds, Drogon will reemerge with a large fish clasped in his claws, the steam rising from his wings in trails. ]

🐉 ]
Is that your—?

Dany glances up as Drogon rises from the sea, his writhing prey caught between cruel black talons. As he flaps his wings to keep aloft, little thunderclaps sound over the water. ]
My dragon, [ Dany finishes for her, smiling. She can never tire of seeing Drogon hunt, though she pities what he finds. ] The largest of my three, and my fierce mount. Drogon is his name.
[ In Meereen, he is called the winged shadow, but Zokla need not know that. A cloud of black passes from his mouth, chased with swirls of glowing red, and the creature's suffering is over in moments. ]

she had seen his shadow before yet drogon is blacker even than that, as black as his fire that raises a hot mist even when it does not touch the water. the shots of red in the flames match the red horns and the red crests along his spine. even from afar, his eyes burn as bright as scarlet stars.
a dragon!, she exults. after they were all supposed to have died. a true dragon! here before her. diving into the sea to fish. a disbelieving laugh tumbles from her lips.
she had once known a boy who had wanted to be a knight and loved stories best of all who would have laughed too to see this.]

Zokla's father was Westerosi, Dany now suspects. To examine her face, she bears the look of the Seven Kingdoms about her. Does she know the same stories? she wonders, watching the girl rise onto her toes and laugh for joy. It is a queer sound, coming from someone so guarded.
Yet it is the same wonder Dany herself feels every time. She watches as Drogon flaps his wings into a glide, beginning to sail over unseen currents toward a rocky shore with his prize, unchallenged by anything lurking below. ]
Your sailors did not lie, [ she remarks, the dragon alighting upon a large boulder and beginning to tear into his prey with long black teeth. ]

[ something dany said finally sinks in. facing the targaryen queen now, though zokla keeps throwing glances over her shoulder in the direction drogon settled.
the dragon queen is not as expected: young still and delicate looking. she draws the eye to her. bravos would take to the streets to challenge anyone who didn’t name her the most beautiful.
but anyone who would walk up to a dragon, much less mount one, must be as strong and unyielding as valyrian steel, and that is the sense zokla gets from daenerys. the targaryens were to all have died, same as their dragons. daenerys targaryen is alive. not only alive but well, and a queen who somehow brought dragons back into the world.
zokla had a westerosi father, and she loved to linger among the westerosi sailors, listening to the songs and stories they brought from the place where she had been born. she thinks this is what rhaenys and visenya targaryen must have looked like: capable of drawing to her those around her…to a pyre if given cause. ]

I do, [ she answers, already tasting the salt upon her lips and smelling the sea wind in her hair. ] He tested me, as the dragons of old were wont to do.
[ Her smile, previously gentle, curls a little about the edges. She survived, evidently. Many of the dragonseeds did not. ]
He may be double that size, in truth, [ she says admiringly. ] It would be a fine thing to see Drogon as he is ... but it would not do to unleash his true form upon this world. He is strong enough to carry off a horse, and I should grow to have half the farmers of Hanabira demanding silver for their lost livestock.
[ Or their children, though she prays there should be no instances of that. ]
no subject
no one would be unafraid, and though zokla is wary and respectful, she also rises on her toes and squints against the bright reflection off of the water's surface. a dragon. ]
Dragons, [ she says in the common tongue, affecting a strong braavosi accent. her grin is quick and wide as she continues in braavosi, ] I learned that from Westerosi sailors. They'd pay in coin and stories if you told them the best taverns and brothels and lead them to the Sept-Beyond-the Sea.
