The circular motion of his logic battling with his impatience is what keeps him from noticing Rey until she closes the door behind him.

He couldn't imagine Rey willingly leaving hostages behind. There's no denying the curiosity in his voice -- they'd been discussing several extraction methods, and he'd be lying if he wasn't interested to hear how she applied his advice.
He leans back against the edge of the railing, checking his wound to see if it had re-clotted yet as he poses his request:]
