He doesn't see that the purpose she speaks of isn't just the Resistance's values adopted as her own — firstly because they were always her values; secondly because it's more about finding value and purpose in compassion, in protecting those people, rather than making those people themselves into her purpose. Maybe it's not even a conscious projection, but for Rey, it's clear as day. ]

The uncertainty is no small part of what gives her the resolve to restrain herself.)
At least Rey's self restraint is a) better than Poe's, and b) offering Ben the chance to Get Away. ]
