[ The lower levels were easy. The lack of guards, lightened security and overall shittier disposition helped make this seemingly go smoother than she would anticipate. The kiosks were luckily not a hot hang-out place, but there was foot traffic from the tired and impoverished. Ciri stands guard, for now, suggesting any passerbys keep walking or else they are looking for trouble. ]
[ It's unfortunate that, despite her many years, Andy has been obstinate when it comes to technology. Maybe it was just that Booker was always there back home, helping her with the internet and her iPhone. Or maybe she just figured that by the time she finally learned, the next technology would be there already. New year, new phone — what's a year to an immortal anyway? The blink of an eye, really.
So here she is, trying to figure out what they're going to do with this hacking business and finding herself a bit out of her wheelhouse. She's leaning around the side of the kiosk, trying to figure out where the hacking device should go. ]
Fuck if I know. [ Helpful? Not exactly. Andy exhales impatiently and tries again: ] Just give me another minute. Tech isn't my forte.
[ I, Jem, obviously picked the wrong partner for this bounty. But, I'm loving it.
Either way, she pays attentions to the cues of the crowd that pass by, attentive eyes stepping forward to keep Andy's cover. Whatever tool they were given, it definitely didn't come with instructions. ]
Nor mine. You're in good company. I think.
[ Not for this mission. ]
The passerbys haven't lingered, so I'll provide myself as a buffer in case things go awry.
[ You, Jem, are perfect tbh. Andy, on the other hand, is a fumbling fool right now because she doesn't even fully understand the internet, let alone this fancy hacking device. This isn't even her first time trying to hack a news kiosk here — but the first time was mostly luck, and honestly, she isn't fully sure how she got it to work. Damn. She really should have worked harder at understanding technology, but as well as she's aged, sometimes the old dog just doesn't want to learn new tricks.
She should figure it out fast though, because she looks shady with her hood up like that, and she clearly isn't using the kiosk for the news. ]
Athena's saggy tits — [ She mutters under her breath. Ah. Finally, the hacking device attaches. Is it attached right? Who the hell knows. Is it working? Who the hell knows that either. Andy slaps the device a few times with her palm as if that might ensure that it understands that she needs it to function. ] ...Might want to give this a double-check, Ciri.
I promise you, my eyes may be worse than yours when it comes to this.
[ Having two dumb bisexuals who are more use to fighting doing this was a wonderful idea. It makes things sloppy — Ciri isn't stealthy, but she can intimidate nicely. As the device is attached, she glances over her name is called.
It's not as if she can double check with her limited knowledge, but what she can do is imitate Andy — and whop! Ciri forces her palm with a rough force to further snap the device into place.
With a resounding squeal of the machine but only for a second, it seems as if it begins working. The kiosks'screens flicker for a moment before a string of numbers and letters on the bottom become visible, working a status bar that reads 10% and rises every 20 seconds or so by 5%. ]
[ Okay, well, there's progress at least. Now just to make sure that nobody interrupts them while the hacking device does — whatever it's doing, Andy isn't really sure. That slowly rising bar does seem to be taking it's damn good time though, and immortal though she might be, Andy isn't endlessly patient. Not while they're conspicuously standing around this news kiosk.
Unfortunately, it seems the two of them might already be drawing attention. Maybe they should have been trying harder to pretend like they actually care about the news? Either way, while Ciri is showing the hacking device who's boss, a man has stopped in the street to squint at them. ]
Fuck's sake. [ Civilian? Something worse? Andy doesn't know, but she moves to head off the potential threat — keeping in mind that it would be faster but probably more messy if she just punched the guy out and dragged him into an alleyway. She crosses over, digging into her pocket for her cigarettes. To their suspicious spectator: ] Hey, you got a light?
[ I mean, they're just two girls hanging out in the middle of a crowd? They should really start acting casual. But, Ciri keeps her back to the kiosk, like some subtle guard. Of course, she looks down as if rummaging through her pockets. It's around this time that Andy goes off on her own, trying to keep the attention away from them...
Ciri, fortunately, lets the woman work as the newsfeed returns to normal, albeit the status bar.
However, she keeps her eyes on Andy, hoping the spectator certainly will not ask questions... ]
[ Andy, at first glance, doesn't seem like she would be chosen as a negotiator. The woman is blatantly rude, cutting with her words and abrasive in her humor. She looks like she'd rather twist your arm than stroke your ego. And in fact, she'd often prefer bullets over words. But not wanting to be pleasant doesn't mean she can't be.
Approaching the stranger, she drops her hood. She smiles — and it actually looks natural. Just the right about of teeth. Her voice goes warm, friendly. Disarming. The man looks distrustful at first, but he offers her something to light her cigarette with. They talk for a moment. Andy laughs, smoke curling from her mouth. A few minutes later, he seems content to go on his way, no questions asked.
The second his back is turned, the smile drops from her face. Andy flicks her cigarette to the ground and snuffs it out under her boot before crossing back over to Ciri. ]
Fuck me. [ Disgruntled. ] Please tell me we're almost finished here.
[ You know, Ciri probably thought she was more along the lines of a Bruiser. Rough around the edges, a bit like her. She'd be surprised to find out the difference between them. Her eyes watch Andy, perceptive on how the woman changes her demeanor to mask her suspicion.
While she gets her first few glimpses of the persona Andy puts off with the stranger, the bar increases substantially. 80%. ]
Almost, but what a show. I wasn't aware I was in the company of a performer.
[ To be fair, Andy even thought of herself more as a Bruiser. It certainly would have suited her vast experience in combat and warfare. But it is what it is, and maybe this assignment will make use of her skills in better ways, even if she would rather use violence than words. ]
You live as long as I have, you learn to be a lot of things. [ Andy continues to puff away at the cigarette that the stranger had so graciously lit for her. Dryly, she deflects with light mockery: ] I'd turn the charm on for you too, but you've already laid me out on my back, so I think we're a little past that now.
[ Look, this was not their fault. Clearly. But, besides lamenting where they should fall as far as roles and rankings, Ciri is at least acting less suspicious when she's carrying on a small conversation. ]
For shame. One day I'll allow a brute girl to approach me without laying her on her back. Perhaps I'll earn a friend along the way.
[ Teasing, but, she looks back to the screen, the number creeping up. ]
What do you think will happen when this finishes? Will we need to make haste..?
[ Andy seems largely unconcerned, her posture casual as she stands there smoking beside Ciri — but her eyes are sharp, keeping watch for any other suspicious bystanders. It feels as if that progress bar moves even slower the longer she consciously waits for it. Fucking watched pots and all. ]
I'd hope not. If that stupid little machine is worth anything, there won't be fireworks and confetti to alert the whole nation that we were successful. [ Andy shrugs a little, adding wryly: ] But we could make haste, if you're bored. Race back to HQ.
[ She feels foolish to even think of the fantastical possibilities. They were following blindly, briefed only in areas they needed to. Their goal here rested at the top of the chain, and they were here knocking off the links one by one. ]
...You've gone ahead and jinxed us, you know.
[ The sudden completion hopefully will mean things go smoothly, far more than a large alert begging for the police to come investigate the scene. ]
I'm not so sure about that. [ She seems honestly conflicted, as if worried of their location. However, the tiniest of grins sneaks upon her features. ] I'd hate for you to lose so devastatingly.
[ Ciri's teasing earns the wry upward curve of Andy's mouth. She lightly taps the kiosk screen with her index finger, just over where the progress bar is reaching the precipice of 100%. They're about to find out. She can't recall there being a huge fuss the last time she had a go at this, but who knows. This one would be difference. They might have gotten it wrong. Andy's pragmatic enough that she'd be ready if there were fireworks and confetti. ]
I take full responsibility for jinxing us. If we get caught. [ Lightly, she nudges Ciri with her elbow. ] You're not worried about being shown up by an old lady like me, are you?
[ I GUESS THINGS GO OKAY? The bar completes and with a snatch, Ciri yanks the device from the kiosk. She's watchful — eyes flicking among the crowd to try and find anyone who may stick out. Any security that may cause issues. Of course, she tries her best to be subtle about it. ]
Eager to displace your hip, are you?
[ Ciri narrows her gaze, finding an opening in the crowd before she sets into a light jog. ]
[ NO FIREWORKS OR CONFETTI EYYY which is great because Andy doesn't really want to have to talk their way out of anything else today. She's at her quota for fake pleasantries. This is more her speed. A little friendly competition, keep things interesting, flex a bit — better than all this fussing with the tech and fussing with people. ]
Yeah? [ Andy takes a few light steps to come up in Ciri's shadow. ] Haven't you ever heard that nice guys finish last?
[ Then she gives Ciri a taunting little shoulder bump as she bursts into a sprint, weaving away into the crowd. ]
[ There was a lot going on. Through the crowd, the disgruntled and disheartened seem to flood the front of Darkstaden Cybernetics. A few people remained nearby, but Ciri and Rohan were on some sort of reconnaissance duty — blending in with the mob outside.
Vakdir were sparse, but would walk in people who were in fact, able to afford such recalls and replacements. Ciri squints, keeping her own head down. ]
They're refusing people unable to pay for proper gear. [ One way to look at it. ] There's a few dozens here — they're going to get hurt if they keep protesting in front of the Vakdir...
They are a business. [ stating the obvious, but as he takes a look around a pang of pity is hard to miss from within. people here are treated so poorly and it isn't their fault that the sponsorship was revoked. he steps a little closer to ciri, because what is personal space, and whispers lowly: ] We should figure out a way to help them. It's what we're here to do. But that just means getting inside the office.
[ Obvious, one she knows well — she expects payment for her hunts, so... it's no different. However... She winces a bit as he invades her space? Chill? ]
Could you perhaps do that grotesque spell you did in the lower levels? Allow them to assume that we were patients...or on the schedule...?
I could. But, I'd need to make sure no one sees me. [ he gives a quick look around the area. a lot of chaos, but a lot of patrol. and the vadkir won't take kindly to someone doing... well, what he does. it is grotesque and noticeable. ] Perhaps if you can get one away from the pack?
[ She thinks for a moment, looking at the layout of what was in front of them. ]
...I could play tag with one of them.
[ It means showing off her power, to blur away and lead chase. The small patrol of Vakdir were focused on the belligerent — what if Ciri was one of them? ]
A sock to the jaw, pursue a chase and lead them to you tucked away and ready? Or... does that sound like a ridiculous plan?
Ha! So that's how you play tag, hm. [ it's a little on the nose and forceful, but- ] It sounds like a plan more than any other we have. I'll go find a spot away from the crowds and you can lead the chase.
[ A curt nod follows, despite how much Rohan can be abrasive or forward, Ciri handles it with stride. She's tugging her hood over her ashen hair, looking through the crowd of people. There's a few people in similar attire as her. It wouldn't be too badly. Two guards in the front keep people at bay and it's Ciri who weaves between the masses. She glances at Rohan as he makes his way off into a direction away from the crowd. ]
This is horseshit! [ Rohan can hear yelled, her voice carrying as she finally pushes in front of the guards. ] We deserve the right of service like anyone else!
[ A few people are hyped around with her, joining in with the yelling. The Vakdir get annoyed, threatening and with a burst of speed forward, Ciri punches one right in the jaw. The crowd goes quiet and as the second guard reels forward to grab her, she's a green blur and a yard or two away.
it happens just as well as you'd expect, the two guards (one with a missing tooth and blood dripping from his mouth) give chase. Luckily, the girl does what she does best and runs — ]
[ Unlike the lower levels, Ciri has narrowly dodged a few surveillance drones. It takes every ounce of strength to keep from solving all of her problems with running away — she's limited here, after all. For now, Ciri finds herself around a corner with Maya, a suggestion from Rost gives Ciri purpose and she had since enlisted Maya as her equal in helping. ]
Shy of stabbing all of these drones with swords, our biggest concern should be preventing the Vakdir from witnessing the occurrence. Any suggestions?
[ She stands around, arms crossed while she thinks. There's a few avenues to properly take, but the issue becomes on the act being far more obvious than she'd like. ]
Can you explain what powers you have? [ re: normally, or with her role here. ] I'd say if we can do something discreetly, that could be the way to go, however —
Well, I'm very annoying, [ is that... a power.....? apparently. ] I can persuade people a little, I've got shielding, and healing, aaaaand I can move things with my mind. Small things. I dunno if it's work on the drones.
[ did she mention that she's annoying? oh yeah. ]
Yeah! Exactly! Those drones won't stand a chance against you!
[ Ciri's face scrunches up a bit at the annoying comment. How... blunt. However, when she mentions an ability to move things with her mind...
She looks around, watching as a patrol of two drones seem to work on a route out in a small gathering in a more affluent middle class area. The small shops were far from perfect, but people filtered in and out. In their sneaky little alleyway, Ciri has an idea — ]
May I offer a suggestion, then? [ She hates feeling like a leader... ] While it may not work on the drones, could you by chance work on nails?
[ Like, screws. ]
Those giant signs above the shops — they all seem suspended by bars — could you move an element of it, to send it crashing below? It could provide an ample distraction...
[ Ciri seems sunny, teeth baring with how big her grin is. If Maya can handle that, it'd be more than enough to keep the crowd distracted. The two patrol drones won't know what hit them. ]
I'll need you to work on that, just make sure it falls.
[ There's a sisterly pat on her back? Good job fam. ]
[ she'll certainly try!! she perks up a little at the smiling and the pat on the back. better than a punch to the face! just kidding, she's just happy to be useful. ]
Okay...... here I go.
[ she concentrates hard --- pulling the nails. it takes a couple of minutes, but the sign starts to lean over, groaning loudly --- causing the vakdir's heads to turn. she gives ciri a thumbs up, which is probably meant to be the signal. ]
[ That was a good lead-in, enough time for her to act. She's casual, strolling into the darkness down the hallway with her hood lifted high over her hair. The only thing visible is the spark of green from her eyes.
Steady, Ciri does not move until the Maya's thumbs up and forward she dashes in a streak of green, her form like a phantom - gone in a blink. ]
[ maya stays behind, magatama glowing, a bead of sweat slipping down the side of her face as it works. it's hard work, especially from such a distance, but one by one they start to come apart, and the sign leans forward, and forward -- the drone starts to drift that way, but the vakdir converge towards the sign, pointing their guns at it and looking for the source of the mucking about. they're not looking in the right direction, though! ]
[ She wishes she could handle this alone, take the burden and risk. There's a lot of witnesses and anyone like Maya and Ciri would stand out — but they're not the ones risking right now.
So, they compromise. Maya in the shadows, Ciri bending space and time to become all but a motion of movement. She regretfully leaves Maya out of her eyesight, her vision focused on the drones that begin to filter over.
Just once more. Ciri mutters to herself, darting behind the crowd. The finale would be enough to distract, if only she can strike - ]
[ the sign falls at last --- the vakdir narrowly avoid getting crushed and the rest of the crowd disperses in a panic. the vakir fire near the sign after it's fallen, searching for the target --- while maya has to take a breather from the exertion, slumping over. the stage is set for ciri, now all she has to do is strike!! ]
[ She's not too keen on timing — it's a tricky thing. What feels like hours to her could be seconds to another. When she slips in and out of a timestream, it's different here. Smaller options, less distance covered. But, what matters is Maya's determination. It's enough to make this task an easy one.
A dash of green launches from the ground and it's as if time itself slows. Precisely, Ciri launches her sword mid-air into one of the metallic drones. She groans as her feet hit the ground, the sparking and malfunctioning device falling limp. Luckily, the sign was enough to give her time to pounce once more — her exit back to Maya. An upward slice to the partnering device exposes wires and circuits before it patters into the side of a building and smokes itself out. In seconds, Ciri is all but a blur of motion back to Maya. ]
