I don't have nearly the affinity with animals that you have... other than cats. [which he supposes makes sense. cats and spirits sort of go hand in hand.

he pulls his notebook out of his pocket to check his scribblings.] Weeell.... The data's pretty consistent. The mist doesn't change or anything from day to day.

You really are a cat person. [ It's a comment that makes her smile though, before she looks towards the notebook - curious. ]

Were you expecting it to change?

Well, I thought perhaps a natural occurrence would have some variation, like how fog can be thick or patchy depending on the circumstances. I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt that it's simply a quirk of this world, but... Now I'm almost certain it must be a barrier of some kind.

[assent]

That would not be surprising. [ Sonia pauses. ] It does not seem like this world holds much else. It may interfere with signals so no one unwanted finds this place.

[predomination]

Or possibly to keep us from falling off into the void somewhere. They say it's not even a full world- just a partial one, stuck in this one sliver of Timeline.

[it seems impossible, but no more impossible than anything else they've seen.] When I first came here, I thought it might be a way to cage us in.

[assent]

Enserio?! [ She sits up straighter at that, not aware of it. ]

It may be both... who is to say for sure when they keep information from us.

[predomination]

I'm still not sure if that wasn't just an accident, but we can't be certain of either, now can we? [he tilts the brim of his hat up just a bit.] Even if we are merely a rag-tag group of recruits fighting to save the Timeline, it doesn't hurt to consider other options.

After all, if we don't... [he raises a finger pointedly] ..we'll only be blindsided again, as we were in Perdition's Rest.

Of course not. [ Her eyes follow where he tilts his hat, shifting her position slightly to sit more upright. ]

I would prefer not to have another repeat of that, if at all possible.

[predomination]

I don't intend to let that happen. [his smirk widens, the glint in his eyes dangerously manic- the face of a man who had never lost before Perdition's Rest, and even with it technically ending in a victory, it was a personal loss for him.] I'll make sure I have a plan for everything this time.

[assent]

Still... this is really not the place for that, is it? [ Her eyes flicker across his face, and she stands slowly... dusting herself off. ] Shall we go for a walk?

[ It's a spot she's contented herself with as a peaceful place, free of the chains held by home or ALASTAIR. She doesn't want Urahara to ruin it by bringing up that kind of talk here. ]

You can tell me about your plans on the way.

[predomination]

[and just like that, the intensity fades, leaving nothing but a sheepish expression that borders on guilt- but like everything about him, it's hard to tell how much or if any of it is just for show.]

It wouldn't do any good to talk about them, but I wouldn't mind a walk... I need to clear my head anyway.

[translation: he's clearly been stuck up his own ass tending to the matter of the next mission and has forgotten, even more than usual, basic human needs.]

Would it not? It can help just get out your thoughts sometimes, just for clarity. I will not push the issue, however.

[ Though she really wouldn't be surprised by that with how she found him asleep in the library that time. Cham-P and San-D jump up from the side of the place she'd been sitting up onto her arm then along to her shoulders, and she reaches out to slide her arm through Urahara's without questioning him first. This is just how she expects them to work. Sorry not sorry. ]

I believe it may be possible to walk all the way around the lake without getting caught by the barrier.

Most of them are failsafes. You would be very sad to know the sort of worst case scenarios I'm planning for.

[he doesn't protest her putting her arm in his. it's only polite, of course. and since she's not gonna push the issue, he's going to leave it there. for now, he's happy to stick to more blithe commentary.] Mm. That's an interesting theory, Sonia-san. What do you think we'd find if the barrier had a weak spot?

Would I? [ Her eyes keep looking on ahead. ] You may be surprised by what I expect to happen in this next mission.

[ She's already seen people whose minds have been controlled to the point of mindlessness. They have no freewill, and their only thought is violence. Destruction. ]

Though perhaps it would just be nothingness. They do say space is mostly that after all.

[and yet all he's thinking and preparing for- on top of all other things- is that he could get infected. everything else, at this moment, is easy to deal with. upsetting, but easy.

he doesn't think anyone on this team could handle him at his least controlled.]

A bit sad, don't you think? Maybe it's just a gap between worlds. Dangerous, but if you could survive it, you could make it to what's on the other side.

[ She pauses the conversation momentarily as she considers his words. ]

Yet not many would survive it, as space is a vacuum in a way. There is no air for us to breathe there. It is a shame, but without the preparations... it would all be for naught.

[predomination]

It's a good thing I'm content with my lot here, then. I would have to try and figure it out, myself.

[it might be nice for other people to be able to return home, but he's not that selfless. he has other things to work on, dozens of projects... and he believes in the work, even if he isn't sure if he trusts the situation.]

It would be too late by that point, no. [ A beat, then: ] So I am glad you were not planning on diving in without preparing first.

[ Their relationship -- whatever weird friendship this may be -- may be a little twisted at times, but she's sincere in that she wouldn't want him to die or be lost in space. ]

Fortunately... That's not something you'd ever have to worry about from me. I think everything through.

[including the words that come out of his mouth, as annoying as they are.] I leave rushing in blindly to more emotional people.

There are many unknowns in space, sadly. I am not sure if you would ever be prepared enough.

[ Though she does give him a tiny smile at that. ]

Do you have your occupation and living situation sorted?

[predomination]

I'll consider that a challenge.

[he smirks, whipping his fan out with his free hand and giving her a mischevious look over the top of it.] I'll be staying with Nyuu-san as her devoted guardian, and working in the hospital. I'll be as mysterious and talented virologist from overseas, here to help find a cure.

[he's very into this. so dramatic.]

[assent]

But please be careful.

[ Or she'll have to follow him into space to tell him off?! Though she blinks when he pulls out the fan. ] Nyuu? I see... that is quite useful. I will be attending the University as a medical student for similar reasoning.

[predomination]

I noticed there aren't many people who can claim knowledge of modern medicine and are old enough to put on a convincing show, so I had to take it upon myself. We'll need people there if we want to stay ahead of new developments.

[he taps the fan against his chin.] I can always make a case about you having an internship to keep you nearby.

[assent]

You are correct about that... while I have knowledge of modern medicine, I look my age. [ or some rude people would say younger (nottalking) ]

Though if it comes to it, I would appreciate that. I could visit you under the pretense that I am studying your works, if that would make it easier? I do plan to attend as though it is my fifth year of medicine, so it is not too far fetched.
