EVENT ★ THE SICK AND THE DEAD
THE LAST HURRAH ![]() STATE OF WOODHURST ![]() The city is in a state of panic, and the military has been given permission to use lethal force if necessary to stop people from leaving quarantine; keeping the virus contained is the number one priority of the federal government. As for the local government, all non-essential persons have been given leave until further notice for their own safety. The police department is still running, but they're in a constant war against the infected, forced to retaliate fatally more and more each day. They have no time to focus on any other crimes. Some citizens would be thankful if Audentes ran some "errands" for them — attempting to loot what's left of the stores, for example — or accompanied them outside as protection. Many people have family to see, some of them on the other side of the city, but it's nearly impossible to get there without a bodyguard of some sort. Someone could possibly make some cash this way, but there's something more important to do. MEANWHILE . . . ![]() Administering the vaccine is risky, as it requires escorting people to the hospital without getting killed, as well as hoping the infected constantly wandering into the hospital have been taken care of. Administering the cure is even more so; it's highly recommended that the infected be unconscious before being given the cure. Even Bristol sufferers have to sleep! If not asleep, knocked out or otherwise sedated will do. It is absolutely not recommended for anyone to go at an angry infected with a syringe, but it's not like anyone's going to stop you... except maybe the infected. Escorts and security guards are necessary at the hospital. The police department has offered their services, with their main priority being the vaccine. Until everyone is vaccinated, the city can't afford to think of a way to safely administer a cure to the infected population, so anyone interested will have to do it themselves. Stock up on syringes at the hospital and get going! DR. PERCY ![]() But once he is found, tucked away in a wide cavern . . . It seems he's preparing a hasty exit, with almost everything packed up and his human disguise dropped. Without it, he appears to be an alien of some sort, but not one that Audentes has run into yet. His skin is amber, smooth, and slimy. He has several pairs of wide-set eyes of different sizes, but no nose. His mouth extends far across his face, and below it is a wattle, not unlike that of a turkey. Peeling off him at all times are scales; apparently, he's shedding more than just his disguise. He's completely alone, without another Zymandis agent in sight, and not a particularly good fighter. Subduing or killing him would be easy, especially when it's several against one. When first encountered, he says nothing if spoken to, and only attempts to run. If attacked, he will summon several robot bodyguards -- seven-foot-tall bipedal constructs who only listen to Percy's commands, directed via remote control. They will fight to the death to protect their master, who will use the distraction to again try to run. It looks like the choices are clear: Audentes must choose whether to non-lethally subdue him or kill him. If subdued, what happens to him afterwards is still up in the air. Whatever your decision, it's highly likely you'll meet some resistance from the other members of the team, so get ready to argue. CYOA Each character will only be able to officially do one of the following choices.
You may of course thread out other options, but they will not count for the purposes of the pass/fail tally. Again, you may only officially choose one option per character. OOC NOTES Because this log is being posted late in the month, threads are eligible for March or April AC, but not both. Though the encounter with Percy will be a short one, the rest of this log will last two IC weeks. After that, characters will be immediately rifted away from Woodhurst without warning. THOSE WHO RECEIVE THE CURE: As the virus is not a degenerative disease, characters will suffer no lasting (physical) trauma caused by it. Side-effects from the cure may include nausea, weakness, vertigo, rash, brain fog, numbness of the face, insomnia, dizziness, fatigue, heart palpitations, or vomiting. This may last for anywhere up to four weeks. THOSE WHO RECEIVE THE VACCINE: Side-effects may include irritability and hunger for anywhere up to four weeks. Questions about Woodhurst can be submitted to this thread. Questions about the game in general should be directed to the FAQ. You may submit mission ideas or player plots at any time. All bounties listed with a 3/25 due date are now closed. There are two open bounties remaining on the Bounty Board, which will need to be turned in by the end of the mission on 8 April. ( 1 2 ) |
Mettaton | OTA
[The end is coming. The town is practically destroyed. There's a cure, but for how many people is that cure too late?
There's sure to be a body-count, later. For now, the important thing is to make sure that number doesn't include anymore of their teammates. Thus, Mettaton is finally putting himself to a more "practical" use and visiting his sick friends.
No matter how long he's been staying in the school, it's always a crapshoot in whether or not the inhabitants have already lost their minds. He's twirling a syringe in one hand, glowering at them in their room, cloak off, in an attempt to intimidate.
...just in case that still works.]
I assure you: you don't want me to have to do this the hard way, darling.
[He doesn't want to have to do this the hard way. Do you know how much EFFORT there is in doing it the hard way?]
B) Hospital - Welcome to My Darkplace
[After the terrordome that was the school, it's time to move on to where the citizens need help: the hospital. At this point, the staff don't particularly care about strange men in stolen uniforms injecting sick patients, so long as that injection actually seems to be helping.
They're also willing to refer to said strange man as "Dr. Medda Tonne MD," regardless of how nonsensical that is. If he's helping, they'll let him have it.
At least, until one nurse recognizes him. She stops, eyes wide and terrified, as she watches him. Her hands quiver, reaching her hand out, but not quite grabbing, the scrubs of another nurse.]
"You're not a doctor- I know you!! You were in the hospital two weeks ago; you died!"
[He looks at her, his arm stuffed in the mouth of a particularly violent patient, as he injects them in the neck.]
...that wasn't me.
[Help.]
C) Town - Ancient Zombie Herding Technique
[He didn't see Charlie's mother at the hospital. Sans said he saw her being taken away, but who knows what that implies. It could just be that he missed her: she could have been helped by someone else. It could mean that she didn't make it. It could be that she escaped and is wandering somewhere in the town.
...regardless, there's still a lot of work to do. He's charged himself by now, not wanting to repeat the nonsense from the mall, and stands in one of the more deserted and infested parts of town. The infected don't particularly care about him when he's quiet, what with not being edible and all.
They don't seem to appreciate it, however, when he's singing.
Which he is, wordlessly, a syringe clutched to his chest, to attract their attention. It's working.
It'd be beautiful, if the scene wasn't horrifying. It's probably not the smartest idea to stand too close, honestly.]
D) W-w-w-wildcard
B
That wasn't him. It was his brother.
[Yep. Turning this into a soap operea is a good solution.]
no subject
The nurse turns her gaze to this new interloper, her face just as incredulous as before.]
"Who are YOU?!"
[No. This won't do. Oliver already started the lie; Mettaton has to complete it.
He stares at the woman, aghast, as the patient in his arms slowly begins to calm. One hand now free, he can gesture at Oliver with all the shock of a seasoned professional.] First you have the nerve to bring up the death of my FAMILY, of my own BLOOD, and now you insult my HUSBAND?? Is there no heart in you?!
[The woman opens her mouth again, confused and not quite sure where any of this is going, but Mettaton speaks over her. There's no backing out now.] Did you really think I would leave him alone in all of this mess?! After what happened to my BROTHER?! I need you to leave. I need you to leave my sight this instant, Ms. Clark!!
[Her eyes flicker from Mettaton to Oliver. She hasn't grabbed a coworker, but the thought of doing so still obviously lingers in her mind.
Finally...]
"...My name isn't Ms. Clark."
no subject
The whole situation is ludicrous enough before he gets her name wrong. He sighs in frustration, but even if he hadn't slipped up there it's not like either of them were being particularly convincing.]
I think you should calm down... [Well. It's too late to back out of this. H might as well commit. Keeping a careful eye on the slowly relaxing patient in Mettaton's arms, he squeezes the robot's shoulder.] Dear.
[He turns to look at the woman, hoping that maybe by some miracle they might still be able to calm her down.]
I'm sorry. He's bad with names.
no subject
BAD WITH NAMES?! Like that's any worse than being bad with PEOPLE! MY BROTHER IS DEAD and I'm HERE, SAVING LIVES, instead of mourning!! We should ALL be mourning, but we are HERE because this is what we DO, Ms. Clark!! We put our families on the line to protect EVERYONE ELSE'S!! I AM TIRED OF LOSING MY FAMILY!!
[The hysterics don't seem to be impressing her, but he wasn't counting on that. He's counting on the side-effect: everyone else is now staring.
If there's one thing that Mettaton knows without a shadow of a doubt, it's this: peer pressure will get the reaction you want every single time.
The more eyes turning to this obviously distraught doctor and his calm, handsome husband is a bad story for this poor, suddenly awkward nurse. She backs away the longer he goes on, no longer sure of whether she should call security.]
"...I."
[She's losing ground. Drive the nail in the rest of the way, darling!]
no subject
[The plea is an honest one, though could work just as well for his "character", if anyone buys their act. He's honestly doubtful that they do. The expressions in the room range from amused to mildly horrified at the show, and Oliver's pretty embarrassed by all of them.
Despite his misgivings, however, it seems as though Mettaton was right. Leaving seems preferable to dealing with this to the nurse, and she mutters out an excuse.]
"I have other patients..."
[It's probably true, but she definitely seems eager to get away from them. Not that Oliver can blame her. He groans, burying his face in a hand. What he wouldn't give to be invisible right now...]
no subject
Any signs of hysteria get put back in their convenient acting pouch as he gives Oliver a winning smile.]
Excellent work, sweetheart. You're a natural!! Were you passing through to help, or is this a special visit?
[Wink.
It's not as effective when infected civilians are still screeching in their binds, but. Sometimes you just do what you can.]

Uhm...
[THINK FAST]
Ma'am! I know we're all tired, but this good doctor is definitely not dead. Look at him, he's flesh and bone and crap-- how could he be dead? You should go home and rest if you're seeing things.
["No! I KNOW what I saw, he was--"]
--N-not even working! Right, Doc?!
no subject
Oh! OH!! It's the terrifying woman from before! Lilith? He's never seen her in person, before.
...Those tattoos (he's never seen tattoos before, either!), that hair...]
Precisely, [he spits out, trying to shake himself out of his temporary distraction.] I just got here! How could I know anyone? I've never been here before.
[This is, evidently, not the correct answer.]
"We're under a QUARANTINE!! You COULDN'T have just gotten here!"
[Shit.]
I'm here with a CURE. Because the GOVERNMENT sent me! I'm here from the government- the government has sent me!!
[Why is he so bad at improv when he's under pressure, just kill him.]
also... b....
He's also bored and feeling bitchy, which is why he says, slumped over in a nearby chair, ] No, that definitely was him, I saw him, too. You're... sooo right. [ He's a little too tired to really sell it, but he's weak and sick and still taking the opportunity to say this, so it must be true. ] Zombie or ghost? I say that's for the court to decide.
no subject
[Of all the rude...
Mettaton turns his head towards dearest Rhys the same time the nurse does- but her expression is a bit more... huh. Is that. Embarrassment on her face?
Oh... Ohohoho!! It must not sound so good when you say it like that!]
"No-- I. I mean!!" [She's sputtering, waving her arms in an effort to get her sentences out right.] "I mean, he got back up, b-but-- but Amy checked and he didn't have a PULSE!! He wasn't even WARM! He was--"
Dead, yes, I know. [Now that the patient is growing still, Mettaton pulls away from them and comes a bit closer toward Rhys. That's a cute chair you have. He's just going to sit on the arm of it, cross one leg over the other, and pat on you the back.] Tell me again about my options, darling? Zombies or ghosts... that sounds so limited.
[The poor woman looks so angry and flustered.] "This isn't funny!! You're NOT a doctor!" [She points toward Rhys.] "And I don't even know who YOU are!"
no subject
Yeah, but. I never claimed to be a doctor, so who cares who I am.
[ Just kidding, clearly everybody cares.
He turns his attention back to Mettaton, raising an eyebrow quizzically. ] Where'd you go to medical school again?
no subject
Mettaton smiles, forcefully, and outspreads his arms as he laughs cheerfully. He nudges one of the other nurses who's been drawn in by the commotion.]
HAHA! What school DIDN'T I go to?! Med school, am I right?
[The first nurse turns toward him, seemingly contented to realize that Rhys, this horrible, HORRIBLE traitor is on her side. She's pointing at Mettaton now, stomping closer to them.]
"No, he's right. What school DID you go to?"
[His eyes go to Rhys. I'm going to kill you.] Har... vv...... [She's squinting. Is that not the right answer? UH.] yaal...eeeeeeeeee????
[.........]
"Harvyale?"
It's in Ireland.
"You don't SOUND Irish."
You'd be surprised who doesn't.
[...both of the women are staring at him now. They're going to call security, aren't they? He was just trying to help. He was just trying to help!!! He's a good person! He doesn't deserve this!]
Oho, would you look at that!! Rhys-darling, you look so ill!!! Why don't I take you while these lovely ladies keep helping the rest of the patients here?!! No no no, never you worry, you're in good hands!! [He's already clambering off of the chair and attempting to pick the other man up in a bridal carry.]
no subject
[ He doesn't really have time to laugh it up, because then Mettaton is touching him, gross. It's called personal space?? He's not exactly easy to manhandle, being as gangly as he is, and he flails a little just to make it more difficult. He might be attempting to kick Mettaton in the face. It's all just a blur of giraffe limbs. ]
Oh, my god. No, thanks.
[ He glances over at the nurses, regretting his decision to get at all involved. All he wanted was to bully someone, is that so much to ask!! ]
I don't know this guy! [ THAT'S MY PURSE, I DON'T KNOW YOU. He keeps wriggling around like a weird, giant worm, just to be difficult. ] Stranger danger!
D. JUST AFTER THE PERCY SHIT GOES DOWN
If the Qorral in Perdition's Rest reminded her of Homeworld, then Percy reminded her of herself from before. It was like looking in a mirror with flaking scales. If she thought it would have earned her Diamond's attention, of course she would have done something like this. Look what she was willing to do with the cluster.
The fact that she can understand why someone would do something so awful and vile, even if she condemns that kind of attitude now is what frightens her, and she doesn't know if she can just hold this in. The rest had their minds on other things, so she only voiced her feelings briefly and left it at that.
Now here she is, back at the school. If nothing else, Mettaton should know what happened before the first announcements go up. Both she and the little Pumpkin dog following at her heels are uncloaked when they find Mettaton, and immediately Peridot tries to be professional about it.]
Percy has been dealt with. It's over. [she doesn't even have the heart to put that annoyed inflection on Percy anymore.]
no subject
With a cure and vaccine finally being distributed, Mettaton's been putting his hot, metal body to use; no matter how violent an infected teammate is, they won't like the taste of steel. Of course, there's still... a logical fear. Being completely feral and out of their minds means their willingness to kill has gone through the roof. The more someone wants to kill and directs that want at a monster...
Well. He deserves a break, is all. So he's taking one.
It's in the middle of this break that Peridot arrives with her news. He gives her a smile, noting her solemness and... living pumpkin (!). He's preparing syringes, setting them off to the side of the table he's at.]
Really? Then why is it that I'm still working? [Ha. Haha.
...]
You don't seem as excited to be the hero as you did earlier, Peri. [What happened, is the unspoken question.]
no subject
[she rubs her arm awkwardly, and Pumpkin, sensing her discomfort, presses her veggie body against her leg. the gesture seems to give her some resolve.] He just decided that an entire planet was an acceptable loss to test a new weapon. It's just the sort of cruelty we've come to expect from Zymandis, but...
no subject
[A lot.
He puts down the next syringe, eyes glazed in thought. So this was a weapon. A test. It wasn't a mistake at all, like he'd hoped it was. He was hoping it was just an accident. A conspiracy, yes, and a horrible one at that, but... but someone wanted these results. They didn't want subservience that mutated into a horror show in some sort of fluke. It was never meant to be anything else. From start to finish, these results were intentional.
They did it to be impressive. For fun.
Mettaton's a fabulous actor. Any disgust swirling in his core doesn't show on his face. He moves away from the desk to put on hand on Peridot's shoulder.]
We stopped him, darling. You stopped him. It's going to be okay.
no subject
but she can't, because she wants to be Peridot, and there are some things you just can't shake from your mold, and that's fine, because you make it yours. Pearl still has to dedicate herself to someone or something, Amethyst still prefers to fight over all things, and Garnet has a Ruby's ferocity and a Sapphire's foresight, even when she's the sum of both parts and something entirely new.
so she's Peridot. logical, precise, intelligent.
efficient.]
The whole process is efficient. [she echoes her own words, her heart not in the statement.] It's brutal, but the only way to test something like that is introduce it into a population. They don't care who they hurt- they just want the results. Anything else is just a waste of resources.
[she turns away from his gaze.] That's how Homeworld thought of other worlds, and I almost did the same thing once. And I was just as delighted by the prospects. I didn't care about all that life either.
[she grits her teeth, willing herself not to get emotional- not because it's not right for a Peridot, but because she doesn't want to appear weak. it doesn't work.] How are you supposed to look back on your life and realize that if one thing hadn't changed, you would have destroyed an entire planet, Mettaton. I don't understand.

B
[here she comes to the rescue]
Are you saying that just because he's dead he can't be a good doctor?!
[this isn't a good defense, Maya] That's lifist!
no subject
Starlight...
Somehow, the absurdity of Maya's claim highlights the ridiculousness of the nurse's own and she watches in utter betrayal as he coworkers laugh. She tugs on her friend's sleeve, pointing at Mettaton with a scowl.]
"No, I saw- You checked his pulse!! He DIED or he faked it, but he is NOT a doctor!"
Because I'm dead? [When in doubt.]
"No! Because... I mean...!"
[More giggles. The woman she grabbed nudges her with an elbow, muttering something along the lines of "give it a rest, Jess. You've been up all night."
While their backs are turned, Mettaton blows Maya a kiss. She truly is his hero...]
no subject
Oh, now he's a fake dead person?! Calling him incompetent isn't bad enough? He's lying about being dead?!
[She can keep this up all day. She gives Mettaton a thumbs up right back, but it looks like her terrible defense has somehow saved the day.]
no subject
She's glaring.]
"Look, we get it, okay? Haha, zombies. It's real fucking funny. Knock it off and get back to work."
[...did she just swear at a child? Mettaton flinches, turning to Maya and pointing at the woman scolding them. He shakes his head, as if to say "don't emulate that."
Sigh. He lets loose the patient in his arms. They're already going still, anyhow.]
You know, darling. Once this is over, remind me to get you something nice. What is it that you like, again?
no subject
Anytime, Dr. Tonne!
[She brightens up. Maya's never going to say no to snacks, that much is true] To be honest, I'm not feeling meat right now, so let's stick with noodles... or sweets... or lasers... or money!
[What a variety]
B
...it's not that he doesn't trust Mettaton, necessarily, but he's been trying to stick close by just in case something weird happens. weird things tend to happen when this guy is around.
and then, lo and behold, something weird happens. he turns toward the nurse, and after just a flicker of a deer-in-the-headlights look, he laughs, waving a hand in disbelief. ]
Haha, what? No, that definitely wasn't him. You're just stressed out from all this. You should take a break! Clear your head. We'll take care of these people.
[ with a nervous grin still plastered on his face, he leans toward Mettaton, and mutters just loud enough to hear over the crowd: ]
Not in the neck, dude.
