PLAYER EVENT ★ HELIOLOGY

INTRODUCTION.

It's difficult to tell time without the presence of a sun or moon. There are no stars. The world is in constant blackness, the heavens barely visible from below and the only light artificial. It's been like this for months.

Suddenly, those who expressed interest in observing the sun (or lack thereof) will all at once receive a text message on their ALASTAIR jewellery from 82736775:

Get your shit and go look at the sky. Now's the time. If you need me, I'm around.

It's time to get to work.

OBSERVATION.

Find the highest point you can and point the telescopes at the sky. Should be easy, right?

Be mindful that there are still guards patrolling the city, looking for escaped prisoners, and some citizens would be very happy to tip them off to your presence. There are still animals in the forests to contend with, and there are still nosey citizens who may ask you too many questions. There are also your fellow ALASTAIR agents, who may not be very willing to share the spot they already staked out before you just showed up.

People and animals aren't all you need to look out for, either. Seven hours after the observation starts, there is a lightning storm. It lasts for 30 minutes, bolts of electricity arcing across the sky. It might be a good idea to scurry down someplace lower when this happens -- you know what they say about lightning and height.

82736775 doesn't contact anyone after the initial text, so observers are free to give up whenever they decide they've been sitting out in the freezing dark for long enough.

I get it. Doing nothing is great. It's not just looking closer at the problem— it's actual direction of what these idiots want us to do.

Anyway. Fireball magic isn't on the docket, thankfully. Figuring out what happened to the sun gets his attention and his cooperation fast. Eren looks up from where they're crouching to the looming shadow of the tall tower in the area, which he assumes is what Hide is here to use as a high vantage point. Without a shred of uncertainty—]

I can make it.

[But can you? He gives Hide an appraising look.]

Can you climb at all?

Fair enough. YELLING certainly makes things more interesting, and noticeable.

Vociferous blathering, then? But I promise you, usually it's not the part of a storm worth the effort to be afraid of. It can't hurt you, it's just in the clouds. ( as in, she's really not sure what causes it, nor will anyone, probably. what is basic science?? )

( well, at least he's not havering. then not only would he be distasteful, he'd be disgusting. what she takes as his evident lack of self-awareness is almost charming, in its way.

she looks him right in the eye and then shrugs. ) Oh, no, don't worry about it. What I'd really like right now is a sandwich. ( realistic wishes, realistic goals. ) ...And maybe a quick little look. [Hideyoshi had enough pride to keep his chin up, but not enough to take much offense; no, the twenty-year-old (twenty) sense for chill-- or maybe Hideyoshi's odd tolerance for anything that should get a person's blood rising- keeps him affable and friendly, if not a little sheepish.]

[a glance to the wall, a glance back to Eren.]

[he bends at the knees, hands loosely clasped in front of him in a lame demonstration of someone giving a boost.]

I was just hoping for a few extra feet - I'm sure I can figure out the way once I'm on the wall.

[unless this kid wanted to come with? the serious, determined look said yes (though maybe the guy always looked serious and determined. the perpetual darkened spot between his eyebrows and natural grumpy look said yes).]

["I'm sure I can figure it out"......well, points for being ballsy, I guess. But Eren's got way too much experience with freeclimbing—and falling—to take that answer. Determination gets you pretty far, yeah. But so does practice. A few extra feet isn't going to help much if he can't keep a grip once he's up there.]

It's not as easy as it looks.

[Supporting your whole body weight for that long without an anchor and without a guarantee of a handhold. Not to mention it's dark as hell.]

That far up, you'll break your neck if you fuck it up.

[He says this with the certainty of someone who's seen it happen before. (He has. Trainees die during training all the time.) That said, he doesn't seem like he's telling Hide to give it up, either. (That serious, determined look. Once he's got his teeth in something, he doesn't quit easy.)]

It depends on what that inconvient thing is.

For example, if I ate something [A small shudder.] and I suddenly wanted to get rid of my stomach, well. There'd be complications with the food inside me. I can make the stomach go away, but not the food. It could disrupt my human construct as a whole.

Is it wise to push your limits so much? [She frowns mildly with an almost maternal concern that is only momentarily softened as she watches his motions, and the beginnings of something take shape.]

...It looks like you've gone and started anyway, though. I suppose there's no helping it, and I'll just have to keep an eye on you.

[But, ah, yes, he asked her name, didn't he?]

[Julius moves over and gestures to the telescope. ]

[Julius is an only child. He can't really relate to having a sibling, though he can relate to having a family member. That much is easier to understand. He wonders if Hawke misses her family at all. It is a personal question, so he won't ask now.]

Indeed. As long as we're here we need to find some important clues. How can fortunetelling help us with our search? It doesn't seem useful in this situation...at least to me.

[He shakes his head at the thought.]

Cooking's just a necessity~.

[It wasn't a hobby for him, as some people might have thought given his level of expertise and knowledge. Ban had simply learned to cook, because cooks could properly ration food and make small portions seem more filling. It was important to someone who had lived in devastating poverty for such a long time.

Maybe it was just because he had seen so many brilliantly clear and starry nights that he took it all for granted. Ban didn't think once about how beautiful it looked.

There were better things in the world he stood on and the stars were just another thing beyond his reach, so he just thought they were handy lights for a thief traipsing in the dark.]

As for toniiiight, I spend most of my time outside as is. A bit of lightning doesn't really bother me.

['A bit' was setting the bar awfully low, though. Eyes set on Aqua, Ban was certain she was not only of a more peaceful mindset than him, but she was also genuinely a much better person than he was. He couldn't think of a single off-putting this she had ever said to date.]

[It wasn't any surprise to him. Whether she was a sorceress or a sorceress' apprentice, Sakura seemed pretty capable on her own--so, Ban didn't think much of looking out for her. It would be boring, after all.

[Steven gives lots of loving pets to Hayate and may even try giving him a little hug, as Riza Hawkeye approaches. Once he notices her, he loos up in surprise, with a light gasp.]

Riza, is that you? [Then as glances down at the cutest dog.] You know this cutie?

O-oh... [He blinks groggily as he starts to get up.]

Wait, what happened? Did we find the sun?!

[Aw. Steven quickly regains his composure as he faces the creature. It's easy to tell what she wants, so he steps on forward and starts applying some loving scratches.]

There! That's a good girl, right? Good, good girl!

On a tall building. I had a friend get me up here.

Can you send me your coordinates? [It'd be nice to have a more accurate location tbh.]

[With a pinky stuck in his ear, Ban made a poor effort to shrug his sympathy. Gintoki didn't seem to care for Ban in the first place, so a half-hearted gesture seemed appropriate to return.]

I never said I wanted to find a solution, idiot~. Stop making dumbass assumptions. You just sound progressively stupid every time you open your mouuuuth~.

[He flicked a wad of earwax aside.]

[Shiki weighed whether or not he should have just rolled over and kept sleeping.

He opted to curl up, turning away from Olivia--doing exactly that.]

[ he shakes his head. The rudeness doesn't even offend him! It's an understandable thing for humans to be confused about, as far as he can tell - Marin had asked him about it way back then, too. ]
